Why did Nolan Richardson and Arkansas fall off so fast after their 94 & 95 tourney runs?

59-52 in the SEC after the national championship/runner up seasons.

It didn’t help that Arkansas was racist.

He filed an $8 million lawsuit against the university, alleging racism and bias in his termination after the school gave Nutt bonuses and extensions for what Richardson believed were lesser achievements.

I’m talking about Nolan’s teams from 1996-2002.

The Jesse Pate/Sunday Adebayo screw job by the NCAA killed us. They fricked that one up and ruined any momentum we had.

quote:

issues primarily dealing with junior college recruits pulled the rug out from under Nolan Richardson’s program when Arkansas’ No. 1 rated recruiting class of 1995 unraveled.

The NCAA ruled junior college transfers Jesse Pate and Sunday Adebayo ineligible midway through the 1996 season, and problems with the recruitment of two other junior college players, who never made it to campus, prompted a long NCAA investigation of the program that hampered recruiting for three years.

Freshman recruits from 1995 Pat Bradley and Derek Hood went on to distinguished Razorback careers, playing along side Kareem Reid, a 1994 signee who had to sit out the 1995 season to become academically eligible, and Nick Davis, a junior college transfer that had a great senior season.

Bradley, Hood and Reid were the nucleus of teams that won a lot of games for the Hogs, but the chilling effect from the NCAA investigation hurt recruiting and kept the Razorbacks from being all they could have been during that period. That lag in recruiting became most apparent in 2000 and 2002.

If they hadn’t incorrectly ruled Pate and Adebayo ineligible, we would have kept rolling with the combo of those two, Reid and Bradley with everything else around them and continued top recruiting.

Sunday Adebayo

Wasn't elgible at Arkansas but could transfer to any school without sitting out. Transfers to memphis then NCAA realizes it was a mistake and was able to transfer back to Arkansas without sitting out.

What made it worse was Arkansas was found not to have committed any infractions and they even gave Adebayo a 6 year of eligibility to return back to AR.

My dislike for Richardson was only exceeded by my dislike for John Thompson at Georgetown. They made everything about race. Maybe it was but diplomacy goes a long way in negotiations.

If I remember correctly, he quit coaching and started acting like more of a civil rights leader instead. I guess there is nothing wrong with the latter, however, he was being paid for the former.

They made racial situations about race.

What logic can you provide that would substantiate giving Houston Nutt an extension and not give your National Champion, National Runner Up, 3x Final 4 participant, Several SEC Championship Head Basketball Coach an extension?

Just because one is white and the other is not does not automatically make it about race. I don't know all of the circumstances around either. Do you?

For a moment in time I was hurt by Nolan's comments right when it happened that seemed to paint fans as a bunch of haters and that was because I was always a huge fan and defender of his.

He started at AR when I was ehh 12ish and his daughter that passed away was close to my age. I got over my rather unimportant hurt feelings because I love Nolan- as much as you can love someone you don't personally know and I will always feel that way. I also feel like Nolan actually experienced hard racism (that's probably a criticizable term) but what I mean is Nolan is probably around 80 years old now. The man has lived through stuff that I'm sure no one my age or younger ever had to deal with- black nor white etc. In other words, I feel like he earned the right to feel how he felt and I'm only left with the love for him.

He did go through a lot. The death of his daughter, people shooting his horse, the media disrespecting his style of play as "thug ball" compared to the "intelligent" way Duke played. No one gave us a chance in that game.

He took it a little too far but a lot of people would be pretty jaded after all that.
