You would have to think that LSU would've bailed from Pineville at some point.
I mean, come on...Pineville?!
Yikes.

Well State is still in Starkville, and UF is still in Gainesville...
I suppose it would have depended on how much the state had spent on infrastructure in Pineville.
Think about what Jackson, Miss would be like if the state of Mississippi had followed through on their proposed plan to combine State and OM and relocate the new campus in Jackson, near the capitol.
Would Jackson be the shitehole it is today? I'm guessing no.

"The Capstone"
The University of Alabama is often referred to as "The Capstone" by alumni and friends of the university. "The Capstone" is a nickname for The University of Alabama coined by former UA President G. H. Denny when he referred to the University as the “capstone of the public school system of the state” in 1913. Capstone means 'the top stone or high point.'

Most schools state/land grant schools are where they are because of the lower cost of land when they were built.
Although LSU obviously made the right choice in moving to the state capital.
Tuscaloosa was once the capital of Alabama, but I'm glad UA didn't make the move to Montgomery in the 1850s.

There was actually a movement in the late 19th century to consoldiate the schools in Mississippi, having a one main campus in Jackson.

I'm thinking that a 25,000-30,000 student campus, plus all the bars and businesses that would cater to them, would mean a far different Jackson than the one we know today.

good thing the original campus burned down. br is slightly better than pineville
The campus is smack dab in the middle of one of the worst areas of the city though.

Well, I'm sure that Alexandria would've eventually taken it over, so Pineville would have gotten screwed one way or another.

That's a little over the top, considering how much houses go for across the lake and down Highland.
The area north of the shopping area outside the north gates is the only questionable area near campus, and there are plans for that afoot.
Come back in ten years, and you won't recognize it.

that area is a potential goldmine with some right developers/planners/entrepaneurs.

Just saying I'd hang out with you Bama folks and watch the two flagships mix it up. Use of Capstone was not a slight, just in keeping with my reference to flagships... All in good fun, I assure you

Believe me, I know. They shut down several streets so they could finish a bunch of construction this summer.
I should have said on the edge. The west campus is on the other side of highland.
My roommate was a transfer student from Nigeria and he always let his GPS lead him to the ramp on Braddock to get to I10.

I kept telling him Dalrymple Is not only closer , it's safer. But

I'm seeing a trend here...Pineville, Starkville, Gainesville...
If the school is located in the 'ville, don't expect a lot of excitement.
