Years ago I heard a reporter say that Donovan was frustrated with the fact that he still had trouble recruiting the 5 stars to Florida after winning two NCAA titles. Don't know if it's true or not, but I would understand it at Florida or any SEC school not named Kentucky.
I don't know about that quote, but I do remember a lot of talk about how BD wasn't a big fan of where the state of recruiting was going. I'm not sure that's the main reason though. Coaching in the NBA is a big bucket list goal for a lot of guys.

I think this was similar to Bob Stoops & UF. Can't tell you how many times we've heard it was a done deal he was coming to be our HC. At the end of the day it just wasn't true.
Yeah. I think it was one of those cases where it was legitimate interest but it just wasn’t the right time/right situation.

The truth is that he tried to leave for the Orlando Magic in 2007 but then Foley promised him funding for new arena/facilities so he came back.
Donors said naw to that because nobody gives a shish about basketball outside of Lexington, so Donovan finally rolled out and nobody in Gainesville gave two fricks about it the day he left.

Donovan left because tFear was real. Cal coming into Lexington, he knew the king was back. He had a nice little run in the SEC while Tubby and inexplicably BCG were in the Bluegrass for a decade, but he knew what was coming if he'd stuck around. Easy to take the money and run to OKC while his stock hadnt takena beating yet.
