That's one possible approach. Of course, Missouri's yankees spell things wrong just as frequently as Southerners do, so it wouldn't really speak to his Southernness

No, I'm just saying Missouri is ranked the same as a bunch of southern and yankee states. Therefore, misspelling does not have a cultural/regional association
Of course, I wouldn't expect a yankee to know much about the South's culture. Nice try though. Maybe try something with moonshine or incest next time

That was a weird study. It included a grade based upon home-school education legislation and a host of other interesting but non-student-performance measures.
Go to test scores and literacy measures, and it gets ugly for comparison pretty quickly.
