I feel for the Hogs on this one. It's not like AR is some massive state.

Exactly, and if you can afford to get to Little Rock you can afford another 2 hours on the freeway. Not a big deal, some people try to act like driving from Lake Village to Fayetteville is the frickin trail of tears or something though.

Agreed... Every SEC team has done this and put it in the past.

State/OM both played all big home games(plus the Egg Bowl) for 25 years in Jackson, until State decided to upgrade Davis-Wade and take the Egg Bowl to Starkville in '91. OM followed with Vaught Hemingway upgrades, and the rest as they say is history. Similar situations to you because both schools are rural locations, not centralized in the state, and used to be very hard to get to. The difference is that the Jackson stadium is STILL bigger than Davis-Wade, and the same size as Vaught Hemingway. But the amenities are terrible, and the stadium refused to keep up with the times.

Jackson is 2.5-3 hours from both State and OM, which holds the largest contingent of each fanbase by far(same as LR). Doesn't hurt either fanbase in any way. I make every home game @ State and several @ OM every year, and I live a few miles from Veterans Memorial in Jackson. Just turns into a 90mph caravan on Friday/Sunday...

I could see the argument to keep the games in LR if War Memorial was as big and nice. At some point, you've got to make a calculated financial decision...

Thanks for the input engie. That was kinda what I was looking for.

I've decided that WMS is our weekend stadium. Not nearly as nice as our regular home, put it's got charm and we have more fun there because if we screw something up it's not a big deal if it gets fixed or not becuase we don't have to see it every day like our everyday stadium.

And...people like you are why Arkansas will remain a second-class program. Too much emotion, not enough business. To be elite, we need to make cold, calculating business decisions like the rest of the top schools. We need to look at numbers only. Think about all the extra money if we moved all games to Fayetteville, yet we won't do it because we are emotionally attached to a shitty, tiny stadium hours from our campus.

You can't say that people that don't attend games aren't real fans and not expect an emotional response.

Now that that is out of the way, Arkansas is what Arkansas is because of the recruiting base. No amount of money is going to turn Arkansas into a national power unless the money is used to cheat.

FWIW I don't give a shite if they move all of the games to NWA. I'm going to the games like I always have

Most teams rely on national televised games to help with recruiting. Playing at home means more to most schools.

First it's 2 and a half, now it's 2. It's actually 3 hours and for some people that does make a difference. Perhaps they can afford the gas, but can't afford a hotel for a 6:00 game. Once again I don't care where they are played, but I'm not short sided enough to think that some people can only afford to go to LR games. You should just admit that you don't give a shite about those people because they don't have enough money to be donors.

When I was in school at Fayetteville, it was a 5.5 hour drive from my home in south Arkansas. It never bothered me and I know the roads have improved but it's still a 300+ mile drive for some instate fans.

It was a much closer drive to Dallas.

Arkansas is what Arkansas is because of the recruiting base

Yeah, in-state recruits have hardly contributed at all to our recent success.

Good luck explaining that to Joe Adams, Tyler Wilson, DJ Williams, Jerry Franklin, Jarius Wright, Brandon Allen (in the near future), Greg Childs, Ryan Mallett, Cobi Hamilton, Darren McFadden, Peyton Hillis, etc etc etc.

I don't buy the "Arkansas's recruiting base sucks" excuse. Based on that list, AR kids are our team's nucleus

Ryan Mallett and Cobi Hamilton played for Texas high. The state produces some very good players, but as a whole the recruiting base does suck. The only SEC states that produce less D1 talent than Arkansas are Kentucky and Missouri.

Ole Miss is closer than Fayetteville for the majority of South Arkansas fans, and Starkville is closer for some, anything around El Dorado it's not much farther to Baton Rouge than Fayetteville.

Just for perspective.

I know that (Mallett lived in AR, Hamilton lived in Texas) but they are not products of Arkansas high school football.

Mallett lived in Arkansas when he was going to Texas high, I believe because his dad coached at the middle school and his
Mom taught there

Yup Lincoln, I had Mallett's mom for 2 yrs of English and his pops coached football and baseball. I liked his dad a lot, we had some pretty solid coaches that really pushed us.

I could tell you why they left Lincoln too, but that's not something I'm putting on a msg board.

I had high school friends that attended SMU, Ole Miss, and Miss. St. for that very reason. My dad was from El Dorado and chose Ole Miss but he couldn't help it. He loved that school.
