profootballreference put out an article about the subject of Namath and the NFL HOF and why he deserves to be in it. I'll try to find it, they broke down a lot of stuff.

And I can't source the quote, but some HOF voter said getting into the HOF isn't about personal statistics, it's about your impact on the game. Now that doesn't mean everyone in there has bad career stats either. Namath changed the game on and off the field. Just looking at his statistics and calling him undeserving is just ignorant.

Yes he had bad knees. So did Tony Oliva who was one if the best hitters I've ever seen. He's not in the Hall of Fame because his career was cut short. In his prime he put Namath to shame.

Is Bo in the Hall of Fame? No, and if he was he doesn't deserve to be.

I never could understand how he made it into the Hall of Fame. He has horrible stats passing for only 50.1% in his career. The most telling stat is his 173 TD's to 220 interceptions.

He's no Brett Favre.

I don't think Bo is overrated. I think Joe should be in the HOF, for all sorts of reasons aside from his statistics. They talk about some in the movie. You have to look at the whole picture, and his impact. I'm glad he made it.

That said, I'm going to go watch the Namath movie again, and I don't really care if you think he's not supposed to be in.

It also took Fran Tarkenton THREE tries to make the HOF and when he retired he was the NFL's all time leading passer. Why? He didn't win a Super Bowl. Namath was good for a few years, but just didn't have a long enough career. Towards the end it hurt me just watching him try to play with knees the size of volleyballs. Too bad they didn't have the medical procedures then that they have now.

It ticks me off that we had a free HBO weekend and I just found out about it. Is the special going to be shown again? I'd like to see it. Did he talk about how much he was offered to play college football? I saw one interview where he said he was offered a new car, cash, and a monthly salary. He was blown away by that.

Yeah, that Lincoln continental was part of his pro signing deal.

OMG, what are you talking about? Wasn't it a Namath thread? Wasn't I talking about the NFL HOF? This has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with Alabama. Why would you even think that?

Why would you think where he went to college had anything to do with being in the Hall of Fame? Never seen anyone get so butthurt about anyone saying anything remotely negative about anything even remotely to do with your school. Did you even see him play? I loved him and he was one of my favorite players. He just doesn't deserve to be in the HOF.

Joe laughs at that offer.

No, he was offered one right out of high school. By the way he wouldn't say which school, but did say it was not Alabama. He said they didn't offer him anything. He also said his dad wouldn't have stood for anything illegal.

He was offered $50,000 to play baseball right out of high school too.

He didn't make grades to go to maryland, which was a main reason he ended up at Bama. Maybe you should watch the documentary.

I think I might still have the old Playboy writeup about Namath somewhere. I'm pretty sure it was supposed to belong to a friend's dad because I was too young at the time to buy Playboy.

ETA: I liked to read the articles.
