That explains why HBO made a film about him.

Can you imagine what he would have been with healthy knees?

That was a great entertaining documentary.

I was in the 10th grade in high school when Joe started his first game at Alabama versus Georgia in Birmingham to open the 1962 season. We won that game 35-0. This was the Saturday Evening Post game where CPB and Georgia coach Wally Butts were accused of fixing the game. The year before our quarterback was Pat Trammel who lead us to the 1961 national championship. Everyone was wondering if this new kid from Beaver Falls, Pa. would be worthy of filling Trammel's shoes. It didn't take us long to figure out that we had something special on our hands and that everything would be alright for the next three years. Before Joe hurt his knee against North Carolina State he was one of the most mobile quarterbacks I had ever seen. He could run as well if not better than he could pass. It's a shame he was so injury prone. If it had not been for the bad knees I think Joe would have gone down as one of the top two or three best quarterbacks of all times in both college and pro football.
I really enjoyed his talking about the team concept of football and the winning as more important to him over individual accomplishments. I guess it just comes natural when one played for the greatest team of all time, the Alabama Crimson Tide.

I would love to see a biography on Pat Trammell.
quote:
Pat Trammell, who was Bryant's first star player at Alabama and led the Tide to a national championship in 1961, had died of metastatic testicular cancer in 1968, only two years after earning his M.D. from the Medical College of Alabama. Only 28, he left behind a wife and two young children. In his biography, "Bear," Bryant called the day Trammell died "the saddest day of my life."

I got the DVR set. I can actually watch it this time. I was busy earlier refreshing message boards. Saban was busy on the 2013 class today. 3 commits today. Six 4 stars and one 3 star. Rumor that the Number 1 player in the country will commit in the next day or so

Brief summary so I don't have to sift through Recruiting?

I never could understand how he made it into the Hall of Fame. He has horrible stats passing for only 50.1% in his career. The most telling stat is his 173 TD's to 220 interceptions. That is just terrible. I know it was a different era, but he was elected because of two things: his Super Bowl prediction and the fact he played in New York. He sure had the charisma and I loved watching him sling the ball, but I would agree he is probably the most overrated NFL player ever. The only one close to him is Michael Irvin.

If Joe's overrated, so is Bo. Injuries are a bitch.

I like Namath. My God you are a sensitive bunch of clowns. WTF does this have to do with Auburn/ Alabama? The world does not revolve around your school. This is about the NFL. I never saw him play for Bama and making the Hall of Fame has nothing to do with Bama. How about if you google the number of NFL QB's who had/have better stats than him. You would be amazed. Again the old farts making the HOF decisions put way too much emphasis on winning a Super Bowl. How else can you explain Cris Carter not being elected yet? Top five all time in catches and TD receptions.
