You do realize Tennessee used to be North Carolina? Even so, NC, TN and KY are all upper South states with little to do with deep South states like Georgia.

Alaska used to part of Russia. KY and TN have similar typography and genealogy, like GA & NC. To say that TN and NC are "upper South states" is laughable.

Alabama’s brother is Indiana. Both have two large state institutions, smaller schools that you have heard of (Butler, Troy), ties to the space program, a large city in the middle of the state, and a short coast section on water.

Eastern Arkansas fits culturally with the SEC while Western Arkansas does with the Big 12, as well as possibly being closer to the Big 10 than the SEC. Bunch of transplant yuppies, go Penn St and Michigan. Yeah yeah.
