No. 2004 AU or 2008 UF were capable of beating either.
Of course they were "capable", but akin to one win in a best of 7 series.

One win? That is laughable.

So was 2009 Bama.
Our probation didn't hold us out of a bowl game though. '57 Auburn was caught paying players, '09 Alabama was caught giving away free text books. Which is the greater scandal?

Guess you do not know the story behind that. There is no way AU should have been on probation in 1957. Couple of bama assistant coaches spearheaded an attempt to get AU on probation and the NCAA had just started probations and was looking for someone. Should have never happened. Bama was actually trying to buy the recruit in question, but at the time bama sucked and he didn't want to go to bama. Some bama assistants and a private investigator they used cooked up a scheme and AU got railroaded.

09 Bama won their bowl game though.

Yup, 1979 Bama was the best.

Man,I'd skip that one. Auburn's whole athletic dept was in trouble. Basketball team won the 1960 SEC title and couldn't play in the NCAA's because of probation and the football team couldn't play in a bowl from 1955 until 1963.Probation kept the baseball team from the NCAA's in '61.Auburn was like the O-K Corral in those days.

An eight year bowl ban? Damn...

No, I don't.

...But I'm sure it's not that.

We had our own problems to worry about during that time period and I'm pretty sure the assistants we had back then weren't smart enough to organize such a grand conspiracy.

I don't know that I'd throw too many of those stones. I think 17 straight years is a record.

Maybe so, but the 1957 football probation was undeserved. AU fought it and was shocked the way they were railroaded. The NCAA had zero evidence and were just looking for someone to hammer. The bama assistants and their private investigator cooked up some allegations that were never proven and the SEC did not back AU in Atlanta and AU was 100% railroaded.
It would NEVER happen today. Not even close. The 1956-1957 probation was bullshite and what happened to Don Fuell was a crime. The NCAA should pay a shitload of resitution to him and his family in all honesty.

Well, AU representative actually testified and named the Bama assistant who made the allegations and contacted the NCAA and hired a private detective (who was also named). The assistant left bama and went to Oklahoma state.

Wrong again, and we've never had a 8 year bowl ban in our history..

I missed 'bowl ban' in post above. Now that's pretty impressive....8 years, damn.

It's pre-SEC, but the real answer is 1908 LSU. They went 10-0 on their way to a national championship, while outscoring their opponents 442 to 11, with 7 shutouts.
