If you go by the poll era then sure. But football was being played before 1936. Alabama has been a brand name since before Texas, Cal, LSU, and Auburn. You would be a fool to agree otherwise.
Year of first MNC:
Texas - 1914
Cal - 1920
LSU - 1908
Auburn - 1913
Alabama - 1925

Where do you get 13 conference titles for LSU? Unless they were in another conference before the SEC (Southern Conference does NOT count) then I only count 8 SEC titles.

ETA: so were LSU and Auburn for that matter
Maybe I've been looking at the wrong references... which reputable championships for texas and cal are you referring to?
and I assume you're talking about lsu's 58 season... not counting bama from teh 20s? or did you go with something off label like the 1908 lsu season that no one claims?

Michigan is not even close to being head and shoulders above Alabama, Oklahoma and USC. For one, USC has absolutely owned them for the last 40 years. Also, they only have one championship in the last sixty years and it wasn't even a consensus title.
IMO, the A-list programs are Notre Dame, Alabama, Oklahoma, USC, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas and Nebraska. College football needs those programs to be great. If the majority of those teams are struggling, then college football is down. If most of those teams are doing well, the quality of CFB is high.

None of those schools even claim those titles you mentioned. THat was back when schools only played directional schools from around their state. Dozens of teams went undefeated during that time.

Pretty much the truth. But I think college football is getting accustomed to Notre Dame sucking wind.

+1 SEC has emerged as the best over the last 15-20 years... earlier I think most would have argued for the Big Ten especially

Not my problem. Still doesn't take away from the fact labeled above.

b) Pac Ten teams traditionally never went to any bowl except the Rose Bowl
Too bad for the Pac Ten. Still doesn't take away from my post above.

c) The SEC has not ALWAYS been the strongest conference in college football--that has only been the case since desegregation and has not been the case every year even in recent history....
Where in my post did I say that the SEC has always been the best conference in college football?

It's really cyclical. Conferences just ebb and flow. That's why it's so impressive that the SEC has been so dominant from 2003 onward.

The Tide has been to more bowl games than anyone, they have the second most bowl victories, they are tied for the most number of national championships awarded by major wire services, and they have historically dominated what most consider is the best conference in all of college football.
We are actually tied with USC for most bowl victories. We have the most 10 win seasons and most untied/undefeated/bowl champion seasons with 9. (PSU is next at 5)

with:
bama 92, fla 96, ut 98, lsu 03, fla 06, lsu 07, fla 08, bama 09
that's 8 over the last two decades and the last four titles running... there is probably ebb and flow but with the money machine currently rolling in the SEC's favor they will stay near the top in the near future... the money makes it likely anyway

Oh, we consider you our equal, which is why you practically never beat us convincingly, even when you do.....and you lose about half the time, as I pointed out......
All that bluster doesn't impress us, even if it impresses others.....but you know that, don't you?

The Heisman has lost so much of its luster it's not even funny. It's only relevant because of its name.
