It’s all about timing in the college football head coaching market and being the hottest name when the big jobs open.

Stein currently only makes $5.5 million. I know Kentucky paid Stoops in the past, but would they be willing to pay Stein in the $9-10 million dollar range after one year should a program with unlimited money like Texas come calling?

Texas can handle a risk like that with a huge buyout

You keep pushing this in every thread about coaching changes/openings. He's not going to leave after one year at the school he grew up with as a fan and that his Dad played at (with his whole arse family living here in Kentucky sans a sister in Michigan).

Stein's contract is heavy on incentives. With over $2 million in incentive pay each season.

This is his current contract details:

quote:

Coach: Will Stein
Effective Date: December 2, 2025
Term: Approximately five (5) years, through January 31, 2031
• Automatic one-year extension for each CFP appearance (maximum of five seasons remaining)
• Extension years include a $100,000 annual compensation increase

Annual Compensation
Year 1 (2026 season): $5,500,000
Year 2 (2027 season): $5,600,000
Year 3 (2028 season): $5,700,000
Year 4 (2029 season): $5,800,000
Year 5 (2030 season): $5,900,000

Staff & Incentives
• Assistant and support staff salary pool set at SEC competitive levels
• Performance incentives up to $2,150,000 annually, including CFP participation, SEC titles, win
milestones, Coach of the Year awards, and team GPA bonuses

Guarantee (If University Terminates Without Cause)
If UK terminates without cause: Coach receives a reduced percentage (70%) of remaining salary (paid
monthly over remaining term of the agreement)

Buyout (If Coach Terminates Without Cause)
If Coach terminates without cause: Coach pays a reduced percentage (30%) of remaining salary

Benefits
• Standard UK benefits (retirement match on $400K base, health, moving expenses, temporary
housing)
• Choice of two vehicles or stipend
• Private jet use during transition through Feb. 1, 2026
• Personal suite for home games
• Tickets to other UK athletic events
• Membership in one private club

He's getting ready to hit his first big win incentive if he beats Vandy this weekend ($100k at 7 wins)

If he makes the CFP he gets an automatic one year contract extension.

Dang someone hiring someone with a 3-17 conference record is a decision. But I wouldnt be too sad. As was evidenced last Saturday, minus Kamario he has been awful recruiting and developing and Kamario fell in his lap.

He’d jump at Texas and he’s the current #1 hot name right now.

Stein- Grew up in Kentucky.. why leave a good thing he has going and the program that gave him his start as a hc and loves him?

He will leave eventually. If Texas wanted him, they would get him.

My question regarding Texas, who are they going to go get? I know with the money etc.. they will have their choice, but who is the great coach that is definitively better than Sark.

Serious question, is Sark that good of a HC?

Because he will be the hottest name this coaching carousel and will be at the top of everyone’s list for every opening.

If Kentucky keeps winning, any current contract he has means nothing and Kentucky will have to deal with Stein’s agent pushing for an extension and raise. Hell, they will probably have to deal with that either way, even if there are some competitive losses on the schedule.

Every program with a great coach has to deal with this, and it’s why coaching salaries are so out of control.

LSU dealt with this with Saban every offseason with the NFL and dealt with it 2 or 3 times with Miles’ flirtations with Michigan and Arkansas. I’m sure we’ll have to deal with it given Kiffin’s track record, as well.
