And yeah he played them. Sometimes. And sometimes he won. But the bulk of his games were not against the Joe Paternos of the world

No coach or school plays "legends" every game. However Coach Bryant played top teams just about every year in the regular season. 1978- Nebraska, Washington, Missouri, and USCw for the OOC games. During the 70's Alabama played USCw-4 times, Washington-2, ND-2, Nebraska-2, just for examples. Alabama then turned around and played top teams in the bowls.

By the end of the 1979 season:

Alabama had 6 poll era national titles.

Notre Dame had 7 poll era national titles.

USC with 5 poll era national titles.

Oklahoma with 5 poll era national titles.

Of the teams on that list, only Alabama's and USCw's NC teams all played in bowls.

Osborne lost just about every big game he coached in until the very end of his career. That was the biggest knock on him for the majority of his tenure at Nebraska.

Agreed.

I like Osborne. He was a good coach and I liked the physical style of his teams. However, Switzer pretty much owned his arse throughout the ‘70 and ‘80s, he beat up a lot of shitty Big 8 teams, struggled in bowl games, and didn’t even have to play undefeated Penn State and Michigan in two of his three national title years.

Had he retired after 20 years instead of 25, he would have been viewed as a failure.

Not sure why playing in a bowl mattered. The SEC was the only conference to not have a rule about sending more than one program from a conference to a bowl, which is why there were several bowl games featuring SEC teams against each other.

Oklahoma’s 1950, 1955, 1975 NC teams played in bowls. 1974 was a probation bowl ban year but still won the AP title.

True but without a playoff in 2014, Alabama would’ve met undefeated FSU in the national championship and never would’ve had to play Ohio State

Bear Bryant is still the #1 alcoholic retard on my book. Real role model we got here lol

1. frick off
2. I’d pay money for a chance to watch someone say “lol” to Bryant, or Jordan, or Lehey, or Neyland, or…
3. He did a LOT of drinking with Shug, who happens to be another one of the most badass men to ever walk this planet.
4. I’m a Boomer. I’m automatically smarter and don’t give a frick.

He also said that about Don Shula and Chuck Noll.

Bum was a quote machine. One of the best I ever heard was, "The harder we played, the behinder we got". Bum is a true legend.

And yet you hired a notorious drinker in Pat Dye. In spite of the fact he couldn't win the big one, got in all kinds of NCAA hell and you barners named the field after this drunk. Congrats!!

It must be noted that Nebraska and USC were both ranked in the Top 10 to start the year and Missouri was ranked just outside of it at #11. How many schedules would have the following OOC opponents in 2021?

Nebraska
Missouri
Southern Cal
Washington
Virginia Tech
Penn State (bowl game)

I watched that game. Good grief, both defenses were laying the wood in that game.
