Saban told us this same thing (that they were doing it against him) for roughly his last five years or so.
College recruiting and AAU basketball may be the slimiest things on the planet.

AU would settle with him for a ton of money for exactly the reason you just gave. If AU gets indications that Freeze is checking out early, they would rather pay him a buyout and let him retire than set the program back an extra 2-3 years and have to pay him for nothing anyways.
