What we’ve seen tonight is why having a playoff “committee” is stupid

College football is the greatest sport in the history of mankind. And yet, for its entire history, the champion of college football has been chosen in much the same manner as the local Miss Corn Harvest beauty pageant is decided; namely a group of people, with all their built in preconceptions and biases end up deciding who is, or isn’t, worthy of hoisting the trophy at the end of the season.
It use to be AP, UPI, and a host of other voters for various media outlets.
Then coaches got their own poll, usually actually voted on by a GA.
Then we got a computer, which came with the same biases baked in by its human programmers.
Now we have this so-called “CFP committee”, which is no better, and arguably worse, than the previous litany of college football Championship schemes.
How long must we, the loyal college football fans suffer before we finally get a product free of bias and instead decides the championship ON THE FIELD???
It’s actually quite simple
1. The Power 4 conferences expand to 20 teams each.
2. Each of the power 4 conferences divide into 4 divisions of 5 teams.
3. To make the playoff, you win your division. At the end of the season, each of the 4 power conferences has 4 division champions. That’s your 16 team playoff.
4. Round 1: divisional round. The four division champs of a conference meet. The two winners then move to the next round.
5. Round 2: Conference championship round. The two remaining conference division champs meet to decide who will be crowned the conference champion and move on to the next round.
6. Round 3: CFP Final Four. The four conference champions meet to decide which two will move onto the CFP championship game.
7. Round 4: CFP championship Game. The last two standing conference champions meet to decide who will be the CFP Champion.
This system would negate the biases of pollsters or any committee. Everything would be decided on the field. And this system would not only preserve the confidence championship games, it would actually make them grow in importance.
And if you’re wondering about the “Group of 6”, they could have their own playoff. Let’s be honest. They’re never going to win a CFP against the Power 4. At best they serve as a sacrificial lamb. So, give them their own playoff where they have a realistic chance at winning a real championship.
There are literally zero drawbacks to this system. Why are we not demanding it be implemented as soon as possible?!?

Something much like this would have probably naturally developed had not the process been corrupted by the Bowls and the feckless NCAA.
