There is a downside to that...

And Auburn, FTM.

With Saban, Tuberville, et al, you have to assume that its Jimmy Sexton spreading those rumors. For some reason I think in Nutt's case it was all Nutt's doing.

To seriously answer the OP, Nutt's an average HC, with a one-dimensional approach to offense and a defense that's terribly inconsistent, from game-to-game as well as year-to-year.

But if his team is an underdog to a team that doesn't take them seriously, he's more than capable of kicking some serious arse. See UF '08, LSU '07, AU '06, etc.

One thing that came out during the FOI deal was it was found out that he had called Bama and Miami during the time frames when they had job openings.

Then you start hearing rumors around NWA that Nutt is a top candidate for each job.

Forget about where his 3 straight recruiting classes were ranked, what was their performance on the field once the majority of his recruits played? It’s how many recruits you get to school, how many of those players you keep in school, and how well you develop those players that determines just how good that class was. Not by what they are rated by some recruiting service "experts" out of high school.

As a coach he is below average. As a person he is trash. Nutt is the Jim Baker and Jimmy Swaggart of college football. Things aren't always as they seem.

A decent coach that is too inconsistent to lead a team that hopes to be atop the SEC. When he works hard he can do well, as witnessed by this RC after this last season. The problem is that is takes such a season for him to work that hard. Only when the pressure is on does he put real effort into his work. See Florida '08 / Vandy '08. Overall, I don't think that he is an SEC caliber coach, but then again, there are not that many coaches in the country that are. I do think that he belongs in a big 6 conference though, he just needs a hardass for an AD to keep him in line and hitting the recruiting trail. He would also greatly benefit if he were to delegate more responsibility and keep micromanaging to a minimum.

A side note to fellow Hog fans. We constantly complain that BP gets a bad rap from Falcon fans because of the way he left ATL, yet then we turn around and cannot stop badmouthing Nutt to OM fans. Face it, we are better off, OM is better off, and the Falcons are better off. Everyone should be happy and just get on with it. If morals were a deciding factor in NCAA football, we'd be watching the equivalent of 50's women's basketball. I don't like Nutt personally, but that does not change how he coaches.

Honest answer? Nutt is a good coach, but there are 3 other programs in your division that a recruiting on a consistent top 5-10 basis every year. Arkansas has a better coach and overall program. The only team Ole Miss is really on an even playing field with in the West is Miss St.

A top 20 class in the SEC is like the equivalent of a top 40 or 50 class in the Big Ten.

^This. Nutt is a decent coach at best. He will get 7-8 wins every year on average, but he won't do anything special and he's not a program-changer. Not to mention he can't coach a QB to save his life.

But hey, he's better than Orgeron!

In '98-'99, his first two seasons at Arkansas, he won with Danny Ford's players which included an already good QB in Clint Stoerner.

After that, Matt Jones put him on his shoulders and under Jones the offense was able to put up points without having any sort of a sophisticated passing attack. Jones was from Arkansas and likely would have gone to Arkansas no matter who the coach.

After that, DMAC, Hillis, Felix Jones, Malzhan for a season, and Mustain for a good part of a season put Nutt on their shoulders. Nutt ran off Malzhan and Mustain, and got to one SEC Championship and lost it with McFadden, Jones, and Hillis. McFadden and Hillis were Arkansas boys who were likely going to Arkansas no matter who the coach was. Malzhan and Mustain dropped in his lap but he couldn't handle giving up the control.

After that, he went to Ole Miss and inherited McCluster and Snead and did a good job with someone else's players for two seasons just how he did in his first two seasons at Arkansas.

He's a decent Conference USA caliber coach. Nothing more.

Nutt's two biggest problems:

1. Ego. He really does think he's a good play caller.
2. His staff. Nutt's assistants don't get hired away for better jobs.

This. I think it worked out well for everyone. On a 10 scale, Nutt gets a solid 6.5

This... and add to it, Nutt is the one coach in the SEC that I wouldn't want my son, nephew, or even distant relative to play for. If you want to find an upstanding coach of good character, Nutt won't be anywhere on the first several pages of your list of candidates.

The ONLY SEC coaches I would call trust worthy are Petrino, and Richt; and to be honest I may just be putting Petrino in there b/c he's the Hogs coach. Let's face it SEC HC aren't known for that particular quality.
