I’ve noticed an unfortunate, evermore common, expression being used by the more ignorant and football-terminology challenged posters on this board. They talk about improving a player by…

“…coaching them up…”

I’m not sure if there is such a thing as “…coaching them down…” or ”coaching them sideways…”, but I was wondering just what the difference between that mystifying phrase and simply…

“coaching them”…

I mean you don’t talk about professors “teaching them up,” or DIs in military “training them up.” So I suspect the people who use that redundant expression are just trying to sound football-knowledgeable. Well, no…it isn’t…

Thank you, and I hope all of you have done been learned up…

Not everyone has a roster of five star players.

Which raises another question... is a 3-star (out of high school) player in his senior year after being "coached up" for four years better than a 5-star freshman?

At most positions for sure if the kid developed.

I believe over 3/4s of the starting NFL QBs were 3 star or lower

There are plenty of five stars who need coaching to achieve their potential.

That’s a whole lot of words that you used when you could have just said “I’ve never played organized sports in my life”.

Per Pat Summit, I am willing to help but I cannot start your engine, that's on you. Clear?

If you've got what it takes, it WILL take all you've got. Word.

I can name a number of 5 stars beaten by guys that were determined and just plain nasty in a sport that demands the absolute very best when there is nothing left in the tank.
