From my personal opinion and experiences only, it seems like black people do it for status and/or fashion reasons. I also can only provide this opinion on people I know personally or through others that are like this that I know through friends. This does not apply to all black people, and there are certainly whites like this too.

I just think the white bandwagon fans try to say how they grew up a fan their whole life because their great great grandfather went to Clemson - or they try to explain why they didn't go to school there. This literally just happened to me yesterday sitting at a bar of a restaurant. Guy noticed my Braves hat and said 'Go Braves.' I said are you Carolina or Clemson? He says Clemson naturally, and I say well at least you got one team right.

The conversation then gets into the fact that unlike him, I actually went to Carolina. He explains "I got into Clemson, but I didn't go." Like he felt the need to justify it to me. I naturally felt immediately awkward having asked him if he went to Clemson too, being a fan of them - like I did Carolina being a fan of them. I always feel like I know the answer before they even speak.

9 times out of 10, they didn't go to Clemson. But you also made a really good point... how the frick did I miss the 49ers?

Did you graduate from Atlanta Braves? I find most of their fans to be regulars at bars wearing caps hoping someone thinks they play for the Braves. Speaking of awkward.
