Was it Ray just hanging it up to be AD?

They were on absolute fire. I wouldn't think it be a NIL situation, it was headed south even before that.

Ray Tanner. After Holbrook failed, he decided a guy from USF with a .500 record (Kingston) should be the next coach and gave him 7 years despite him having a worse record than Holbrook. Then he wanted to hire Monte lee but the school wouldn’t let him so he hired Paul hoping he could set Monte up as the heir

Some programs are built around a coach - South Carolina then. Tennessee and Vanderbilt today.

Schools with CWS wins under multiple coaches since the regional format in 1954 is very short.

LSU 3
Texas 3
USC 3
Fullerton 2
Arizona 2
Arizona State 2

A lazy arse AD that should have never been a AD in the first place. He has ruined his legacy and the new AD needs to clean house

Have yall considered that maybe the few good teams Tanner put together is the outlier?

They had years of mediocrity before his championship run and 10 years of mediocrity since so maybe they’re just a mediocre program.

Quite the opposite. SC baseball was the only consistent winner we ever had. It was not built around a single coach.

June Raines and Bobby Richardson both had considerable success before Tanner took us over the hump.

Sure. But Tanner wasn’t our only success in baseball. He’s actually our 2nd winningest coach. There’s no reason we should be this bad even without Tanner in the dugout.

See post above. He’s not even our winningest coach. We had plenty of CWS and finals appearances pre Tanner.

ETA: Wiki really isn’t that difficult to navigate.
