***Fair warning, this is not a Bama fap thread, this is a legitimate "Has a better secondary existed" thread. Please exit this thread if you have nothing better to do than flame and troll.***
2011 Bama, RS players not counted.
Mark Barron - First round pick
Dre Kirkpatrick - First round pick
Dee Milliner - Projected first round pick
DeQuan Menzie - 5th round pick
Robert Lester - Projected 5th - 7th round pick
Ha'sean Clinton-Dix - A little too early to tell, but looks like a projected first round pick
John Fulton - Likely drafted anywhere from the 4th round to the 7th round
Vinnie Sunseri - Likely a 5th round pick to being Undrafted
Phelon Jones - Undrafted
Will Lowery - Undrafted
Nick Perry - 7th round - Undrafted (more than likely undrafted)
Jarrick Williams - No way to tell right now, looking like he's in the same boat as Perry

Nah. Top 10, definitely. You are talking over 75 years of secondaries. Antonio Langham is still the best corner in Alabama history, imo. Tennessee had a great secondary in 98-99 with Deion Grant and Dwayne Goodrich.

Good point, plus no one here has seen every secondary in SEC history, so maybe if we just go from the 92 season until this past season?

Would be much easier to narrow it down. Especially since most of the SEC Rant posters knowledge of SEC football seems to not go past 2007.

Not to take anything away from the Bama unit, they´re legit, but this was just brought up on the LSU side.
LINK
IMO Some NFL teams can only dream of having a unit filled with these players.

I don't think there will ever be a secondary as good as this one was. The depth was just crazy.
2010 LSU DB unit:
CB
Patrick Peterson- 5th overall pick in 2011
Morris Claiborne- 6th overall pick in 2012
Tyrann Mathieu- 2-3 round pick in 2013
Tharold Simon- 3-4 round pick in 2013
Ron Brooks- 3rd round pick in 2012
S
Brandon Taylor- 3rd round pick in 2012
Craig Loston- unknown where he can be drafted next year
Eric Reid- Should be a first round pick in 2013 or early second
Jai Eugene- undrafted

That's a good one too, after all players are drafted it'd be interesting to see how they pair up.

No doubt LSU has been at the top with talented Dbs over the past several years.
Vanderbilt had some good secondaries/defenses in the late 90s. I remember when they had Corey Chavous in 96'. He was a stud. I believe they held Florida to their lowest passing yardage/points that season.

I personally like 08 Florida with Major Wright, Joe Haden, Will Hill, Ahmad Black, and Janoris Jenkins.
Also USC has had some underated years. 05 we had KO Simpson, Fred Bennett, Stoney Woodson, Jonathon Joseph and 06 we had Captain Munnerlyn, Carlos Thomas, Fred Bennett, Emanuel Cook, Darian Stewart but our best year might have been 08 with Antonio Allen, Akeem Auguste, Emmanuel Cook, Chris Culliver, Captain Munnerlyn, Darian Stewart, and Stoney Woodson.
From 2007-2009 we finished 4th, 2nd, & 8th in the country in pass defense. Also finished 2nd in 2011.

2010 LSU probably has it beat.
Patrick Peterson: Bednarik/Thorpe/All-America, #5 overall pick
Morris Claiborne: Thorpe/All-America, #6 overall
Tyrann Mathieu: Bednarik/All-America, projected 3rd-4th round (likely 2nd round talent)
Ron Brooks: #124 overall pick (4th rounder as a career nickel/dime back)
Tharold Simon: projected later round (5-7?) pick
Brandon Taylor: #73 overall pick
Eric Reid: All-America, projected 1st-2nd round
The important point of comparison that puts LSU over the top here imo is the hardware. Where the players from these two secondaries were contemporary with one another, LSU's pulled in the Thorpe and Bednarik two years running and had the higher draft pick status.
2011 Alabama was very good, but I think 2010 LSU has them beat.

This thread needs STATS!!!! Not just draft pick BS.

Where is Alahunter when you need him.

Not sure what kind of stats one uses for comparison secondaries in different years. Individual DB stats don't help because oftentimes the absence of stats is an indicator of success; the offense is choosing not to throw to the DB in question, from which we can infer that the DB is good. Team defensive stats are dependent as much on the front seven complementing the secondaries and the offenses faced as they are on actual secondary skill, too, so they don't really prove anything.
As subjective a criterion as it is, individual awards and draft pick status are probably the best barometers we have for answering the question.

I can bring some stats to the table, but what are we looking for? Season stats, career stats? Just coverage stats, or also stuff like tackles and sacks since being good in run support contributes to being a good secondary. Then team statistics?

Just for conversation rather than debate - I would go with Deshea Townsend and Fernando Bryant as our best ever.

Where do these secondaries rank with ten win seasons? That will tell you the winner.

That and overall team D rankings. INTs and tackles are not really indicators of unit success.

The entire unit of Teague, Langham, Shade, T Johnson and Gaston were pretty good but the draft picks might not reflect that. The scheme and the three man front made it work.

That makes absolutely no sense. Wins and losses are dependent upon the entire team, not the secondary. It's also a pointless comparison with the 10-win metric because '10 LSU and '11 Bama both had 10 wins.

I agree with the second statement, but overall team D rankings depend on the front 7 and opposing offenses as much as the compared secondaries.

Observing. Tryin to let young uns cut their teeth. Takes practice to learn stats are needed for threads such as these.
