I can't believe I'm responding in a troll thread but here we are.

I was shocked the day of the retirement announcement but when the dust settled it was the best move. Cracks in the foundation were starting to appear, NIL and the transfer portal changed the sport dramatically in very little time, and Saban's age was not only becoming a negative factor but also being used against us in recruiting not only players but coaches. Saban said he would step down when he felt he couldn't perform at the same level and that's what happened.

If this was the previous era he could've stayed at Bama for five more years and competed for title appearances. In today's game and landscape, he wasn't afforded that opportunity, and glad it didn't become the last years of a Paterno or Bowden.

2021 should've been a title, beat UGA when healthier but just couldn't get to the finish line with a depleted WR and CB group, RB as well IIRC.

2022 was eyebrow raising. Truly didn't feel like a usual Alabama team, questionable coaching decisions, no faith in either coordinator, just all around a tonal vibe shift.

Last year was the first time I was ready for Saban to step down. So many struggle wins. The coaching staff just as bad as the year before. Undisciplined football. So many mental errors. The team never seemed ready from the jump and had to rely on halftime adjustments. So many poor performances and with the talent level in that locker room, it was nearly inexcusable. Bailed out by the 4th & 31 play and hung on to beat UGA to slide into the playoff. Somehow over the course of the whole season couldn't get a Center that could properly snap the football.

The focus is obviously on DeBoer replacing Saban but I don't think people outside of Alabama realize just how big of an upgrade this coaching staff is compared to the recent years. Loaded from top to bottom.

2021 - lost to Kirby in the Natty... won the West, beat UGA in the SECCG, made the playoffs, lost to UGA in the natty after losing our 2 biggest playmakers (and still had the lead in the 4th).

2022 - missed playoffs, lost @ LSU and @ Tennessee... lost both games on the last play of the game, it was indeed a tough year.

2023 - lost to Michigan in the Rose Bowl... won the West, beat UGA in the SECCG, made the playoffs, lost in OT to national champion Michigan.

So 2 SEC championships over Georgia and 2 CFP appearances, but Alabama has gotten to the point where anything short of the natty is considered a failure, and I'm good with that, but it's an insanely high bar. Only Georgia (I think) also legitimately feels that way even though a few other teams say they do.

hate Alabama as much as the next guy but last year must have been fun as frick to the “logical” Bama fan.

Yep after winning the west, with how the season started, everything after was extra icing. After the USF game I thought they’d lose to OM, LSU, TN and Auburn would be a toss up.

No
3 losing seasons in a row is brutal
Losing by double digits to New Mexico St and Maryland in the same season is brutal. Getting put out of the playoffs on basically a one play game sucks, but it’s not brutal
