Was AU ever seriously referred to as the "defending champs" in 2011?

I don't recall this being said by any reputable media outlet, unless it was in a mocking fashion.

Not really, just came across my mind after reading an article about Louisville basketball. Why?

I'm sure mullen said it thousands of times over the summer in his attempt to pump everything up to superbowl proportions.

They sucked so badly they were never on TV or mentioned in articles.

That was Dan fricking around. Tough finish to the game, but he was blowing smoke.

Just seemed like an odd question to ask all this time later.
Any team would be called the defending champs for the first game of the next season.
But after the Utah State game, I think it was clear they weren't going to repeat.
The 2008 season wasn't too kind for LSU either as I recall.
It's tough when you have to start over with new QBs who have little experience.
Since you mentioned basketball, look at what happened to Kentucky this year after all their stars departed for the NBA. They were defending champs (and I'm sure were designated as such early in the season) but it was pretty obvious they weren't going to repeat.

Mississippi state defending losers

Yeah that's what I figured. I just couldn't rember the life span of that moniker in 2011 or if it was even existent at all.

sure we were...first time a defending national champion had ever lost __. Folks loved to say that.
Stupid thread, even more stupid responses. It doesn't matter
