Dan Mullen went 9-4 in his second year.

Mike Shula went to a bowl in year 2, after having his first two recruiting classes ranked #49 and #24.

Like I said, being "young" is not an excuse. Saban was 7-5 his first year, and played for a SEC title the next. UT looks like a really bad coached team. And with the recent history of UT firing coaches, you might be stuck with Butch.

Oh, I know. The reasons we are bad is 1. Our OL is pathetic. These are mostly Dooley's guys. 2. QB. Worley is back to being terrible. Hopefully Dobbs can be the future.
3. This offensive scheme doesn't tailor our best players strengths imo.

To be fair, Jones has had a brutal schedule to deal with so far. The SEC just wasn't that strong back then.

Zero rushing yards against Ole' Miss. How is that even possible? Just fall forward a few times and you get positive yards.

Sacks. Hurd was actually running well yesterday.

I read a lot of fan discontent with their OC and with Jones being hardheaded about making changes. Some fans are starting to turn on him. If he doesn't make serious offensive changes in the offseason, a lot of fans will turn on him.

Good thread. I'm sick of excuses. It seems to me that good coaches make a jump in year two and I just don't see it.

However, if we beat Missouri, South Carolina, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt to finish the season off 7-5 I will regain my optimism, sadly I dont see it happening.

They had to play 5 teams last year that finished in the top 10. They've played #3, #10, and #11 so far (all on the road) and have #7 this weekend.

No one screams and gets excited like Butch can. 3 more years and he will turn UT around. Butch means it this time.

None of them had to follow Dooley and his Recruiting...Jones' trump card.

We need to flip Richmond. Badly. I truly think it will come down to him deciding on signing day. But he is right, we have to get the talent out of Memphis more often then not.

Also I do not think this offensive staff can get it done.

Not impressed so far. Saban, Malzahn, and even Chizik had success within two years. And you can't say it is a talent issue, Shula created a vacuum in T-Town.

Actually, Saban had winning seasons and bowl victories in his first seasons at both LSU and 'Bama. But in both cases, part of the reason was the cupboard wasn't completely bare. He won the SEC in his second season at LSU with about a fifty-fifty mix of his players and Dinardo's. And 'Bama still had plenty of holdovers from a ten-win season under Shula from only a couple of seasons prior to Saban taking the helm. I agree that the three guys you mention are probably better all-around coaches than Butch, but everybody needs some talent to win.

He was gonna rely on recruiting to save his job and build the program. I think the Rebs might have dealt a deathblow to his program. We've been raiding Tennessee from Memphis to Nashville, and that's where 75% of the state's talent is. UT was a top program because they recruited regionally. Not sure where they'll be now that they aren't even locking Tennessee down.

You're joking right? Cause no one is this stupid

To be fair, the situation that butch inherited was unlike anything Saban or Mullen had to deal with. From an outside perspective, it's not as evident, but our entire program took 18 steps back under Dooley in terms of attitude, demeanor, embracing tradition, and overall talent and development. Most importantly, he instilled a losing attitude among the program that butch is still fighting to get rid of. Butch has his work cut out for him. I think we need to give butch at least 2 more years, a new coach is not what we need right now. We've had 4 in 6 years. We need patience and stability, and time for these great recruiting classes to pan out. Worst comes to worst, our cellar will be stocked if we have to resort to a new coaching hire.

That being said, our offense hasnt scored a TD in our last 2 sec games. For a supposedly offensive coach, this is unacceptable. We need a major overhaul in the offensive department. Some of our playcalling baffles me. Our line is atrocious which limits our calls (but still, our gameplan has not made any adjustments to neutralize that) and our qb has regressed throughout the season. The end of this season might be time to make a change in the offensive coaching staff.

He hasn't impressed me either. And like someone else said, he looks like a 1950's alcoholic abusive working class father... that flat-top with no side-burns just has to go.

Are you stoned or something Mullin replaced Sly Croom, now let that sink in for a moment. Sly replaced Jackie who had mailed it in for various reasons the previous 4 years. From 2001 until Mullin arrived we went 28-65. Butch has a cakewalk compared to what Mullin walked into.
