You are trying too hard, Vandy. Good writers are the ones who know when to follow the rules and when to break them for effect.

But what do I know? I'm a Tennessee grad. The definition of an illiterate hillbilly. Don't get your negligee in a twist.

Means a) you’re a lying sack of shite, or b) you’re older than Moses. Since you’re an Aubie, I’ll go with a. What is it about Aubies that makes such big liars?

Wrong. I’m older than Moses and have moved up the ladder.

What did you teach at Harvard?

Philosophy (it was for Harvard Medical). It's a wonderful equalizer when it comes to testing the minds of young men and women.

What Harvard students have above others is the money and resources to achieve their dreams as well as the belief that they can do anything (and trust me those intangibles DO matter). Many also came from a much better educational background but they aren't necessarily smarter.

On the flip side, one of the most infuriating things I've encountered at public unis were brilliant students whose high schools utterly failed them. I'm talking about super smart kids who might as well have been knee-capped academically because no one bothered to teach them how to write a 5 paragraph theme.

You talk to them and you know it's all there but then you see their papers and want to go back and beat the hell out of their k-12 teachers for not giving them the tools they need express it on paper. So I can definitely understand your cousin's frustration. I spent a lot of my early days teaching my students how to write papers for me which is not something I had to do or should've had to do. It became a bit of an obsession of mine because I came up through public schools and believed that if I could do it so could they. I simply wouldn't accept failure from them and to their credit they responded to the attitude I had.

Try not to burst into tears, please. Look at Prof. He's taking my comment in the spirit it was intended. Read the rest of my comment for a basic idea about my opinions regarding education and the prestige of educational facilities. Or read Prof's comments. There's a lot of common ground between him and me.

(Yes, 'between him and me' is completely correct, just so you don't have to look it up. I taught Freshman Comp for a year while in grad school.)

We already established that I'm illiterate. Stop asking for the impossible.
