I'm sorry but if he had blown up a building or vandalized your coach's home I would probably be more sympathetic to your school's grievances with him. In the end, they are just trees. The guy's a dumb arse, I will grant you that, but I have never seen anyone but crazed nature lovers get so worked up over a pair of ugly oaks that were already dying to begin with.

Yep, both pathetic and I think in large part a symptom of the anonymity of the internet warping people's sense of reality and decency.

well he didn't poison them because they were 'just trees.'

This is old banter. If you want to believe that then you go right ahead he's a joke and so is the stance you're taking.

Harvey Updike is an idiot, what he did was stupid and criminal, and he deserves what punishment the law will allow for destruction of property. No doubt about that, and the vast majority of Alabama fans either can't stand the guy or don't give him a second thought.

But it's clear that some Auburn fans are in some sick way glad he did what he did for the sole reason that it gives them something with which to try and disparage Alabama and feel some source of superiority while their football team continues to sputter. I am pretty sure some Auburn fans would rather lose the trees and have Updyke in their arsenal to use to try and make fun of Alabama than vice versa.

yep. this.

Couldn't agree more. you won't meet folks in common interaction that act like they do on the internet. Then you get a guy who can't distinguish the two and this is the result.

I think it was stated earlier, but i'm just waiting for the reality deprived auburn fan to one up him.

He poisoned them because he was a crazed dumb arse who was upset over an Auburn fan putting a Cam Newton jersey on the Bear Bryant statue as a good-natured prank.

Agree to disagree. I have just never cared too much about a tree, even if I do enjoy throwing toilet paper on them every other Saturday night.

then why didn't he pick 'just trees'

I don't know if you've been to auburn, but there are plenty of trees any number of which wouldn't have made a blip on the radar.

so agree to disagree all you want, it's foolish stance.

answer me this. if he had just picked two trees off wire road would he be in your avatar?

I realize what you're trying to say but they are still just trees. They were just trees when a bunch of drunken frat boys started the tradition in the 40s, and they are just trees here in 2012. The fact that you people at Auburn have a special connection to them makes little difference.

other than that's why he did it.

I don't think you see what i'm saying at all.

I'm not a nature nut saying save the trees. I'm an auburn fan that realizes he made a concious effort to try to destroy something to effect auburn fans.

If he wnated to just poison some trees he could have saved himself the drive from dadeville and you and i would never know his name.

And god damnit...i'm getting caught in the same stupid banter. I think this is half the fun you guys get out of it...say "they're just trees" being intentionally obtuse and watch idiots like me try to explain basics to you.

if so well played.

I'm not a crazed nature lover and I think it was pretty fricked up. Most Bama fans I know feel the same way, I have family in TTown and often stay with them for games, so I have a little better understanding of it. The argument that it was "just trees" is idiotic

Harvey Updyke has turned himself into Lee co. deputies in exchange for a psych evaluation... His bond has been set aside. Trial pending.
-------------------
RT @oanow New #Updyke attorneys had no comment. DA Treese expects trial will be delayed pending psych evaluation outcome.

And I don't think you understand what I am trying to say. Bottom line, rolling the trees in Toomer's Corner is arguably the dumbest tradition in college football. The fact that him poisoning the trees had such an effect (and still has such an effect) on your fan base is very very sad. The trees are still there, and when they die they can just as easily be replaced with fully-grown trees. Does it really matter if they aren't the same trees you have been smothering with toilet paper for the last 70 years?

quite possibly (you're entitled to that opinion)...but it was ours and he tried to end that...why becaue he was a deranged bama fan.

You're also confusing the issue...you said they're just trees. But now you say they're important to auburn fans, so they're not just any trees.
