10. South Carolina at 359 acres. This was a surprise as well, but since it's sometimes difficult to tell where the campus begins and ends, it's hard to eyeball the size. It is an urban campus though.
Exactly. There are some buildings that have USC classes that aren't on the USC map.

One of the ag parks is def. walking distance. A good friend of mine (90 year old fellar) owns a pasture that is just South of the UA ag farm. He still has his own cattle on it. 15 years ago the UA offered him over a million dollars for it. He said (paraphrasing), "nope, this is my home. I've always lived here."

When the Union army came through, the order was to burn the entire campus down. The faculty asked for them to spare the library (which was the original "rotunda"), and the Union officer actually sent a request to his commanding officer asking for permission to spare the library. Permission was denied, and it was set ablaze. A member of the faculty was able to sneak inside and save one book. It is now held in the Hoole Collection in Gorgas Library. What was the book?
USC and Columbia in general are also littered with signs dedicated to some Union army activity. Including Union barracks on the USC campus during reconstruction years. And there is a sign out in West Columbia about the shelling of Columbia. As someone who is into history I find that stuff very interesting.

I feel self conscious now... The Union skipped over us! Damn them!

Let's see. On one hand you have the flagship university of the state of Alabama, which has been converted to a military school. On the other, you have East Alabama Male College. Hmmm..what to burn?

We were a confederate hospital. Those Yanks were pricks, figured they would have come over to finish the job. Plus you could blame the Yankee's for the War Eagle thing being around.

We're talking about each school's main campus only.
maybe we can bend the rules
If you want to start another thread about how much property each school owns and the value of same, please feel free to.
I wanted to set specific criteria in this one, because most visitors to these campuses will only see the main campuses and nothing else.

Actually the fact that the campus was razed is pretty common knowledge. The president's mansion, the Gorgas House, the little roundhouse and one other building were the only ones spared, I believe.
If you want a bit of useless trivia, I bet I can stump the schwab.

The other building spared was Maxwell Hall also known as The Old Observatory. It's directly behing the new Deke House. The book, IIRC, was the Koran.

Something of interest about UA, and I'm sure many other SEC schools, is their original campus grounds. Sure 1000 or so acres of land was set aside for "The University of the State of Alabama" in 1817, but it was essentially just a few buildings around what is today known as the Quad. I think only one photograph is in existence of the original campus.

Our original campus grounds is presently occupied by Louisiana College. LSU has moved four times, five if you count the A&M school being relocated from New Orleans. LSU has only been in it's present location since 1926. It's actually the newest campus in the SEC.

I've seen the discussions over the original campus. Interesting stuff. Old War Skule and whatnot..

Isn't the University trying to buy up land around the strip and west of Bryant - Denny?

Think about this: the newest part of UA's campus includes a building that is now one of the oldest.

Yes, but my understanding is that those transactions will be much like the undeveloped land the university systems picks up all throughout the state...simply for investment purposes.

Fantastic thought. A strong tip of the hat to you.

"LSU's agcenter is located in Jeanerette, La and consists of 1137 acres as well as three additional campuses located around the state. The off-campus location of the agcenter eliminates the problem of stepping in pig sh*t and chicken droppings on the way to classes."
sorry, but the LSU agcenter office is on campus - used to be in Knapp hall, one block from the union, most offices are now down by the south gates. LSU does have 20 research agcenters around the state totaling 18130 acres.
