That is one big lizard. These hurricanes have the gators all over the place in Mobile Bay.

As I understand it the root word for pig in Middle English sounds like sooie. So calling sooie was basically like yelling here cat. Hog farmers for hundreds of years have yelled out sooie (spelled about a hundred different ways) when they are feeding the hogs.

If it helps any alligator comes to us from the Spanish word for lizard (lagarto) which comes from the Latin word for lizard "Lacerta". Shakespeare coined the word alligator in reference to lagarto.

Dropping some bard knowledge on us. I feel like the rant has just gotten a little more refined today. I knew that it was a Spanish word but didn't know ol Willie had anything to do with it being borrowed.

I thought sooie was descended from Middle English, a little research said that was a decent hunch. Alligator is one of those completely useless bits of trivia that gets stuck in your head. Patiently waiting for the once in a lifetime chance to demonstrate that while you can never plug something in a USB port correctly the first time you have completely useless knowledge to share.

I guess I just always thought it was just a spelling of a sound not a real word.
