To be honest, it looks like Bingo Long and The Traveling All Stars will be playing Bingo Long and The Traveling All Stars.

Well considering you are not likely a season ticket holder I am guessing the games you managed to come to have been of the cupcake variety where tickets are easy to come by and cheap. You might have made it to the 2008 Bama- UGA which got pretty quiet after the score was 31-0. However, while I wouldn't say that UGA fans are the most vocal in the SEC, I have never been to a louder atmosphere than LSU-UGA in 2004. Personally, my ears were ringing for days afterward and I was pretty hoarse for about 4 days.
As for it being a gimmick, considering that pretty much every UGA home game is a red out, I am confused how this is particularly different. 95% of UGA fans would have shown up in red regardless. Hell, only 95% of fans will still show up in red.
I also find it funny that a fan base that has so thoroughly embraced an "all in" perspective can have anything to say to another fanbase. The pull towards herd behavior is very strong with both Bama schools.

I won't make fun of you ahead of time.
If you win, then it was a good thing.
If you lose, then it was a bad thing.
No matter what though, those pro combats are a bad thing
Penn State whiteouts are the coolest.
ETA: A blue-out makes a lot more sense when you consider we were playing the Clemson tigers, whose fans would be wearing mostly orange/purple. Pretty practical reason to go the other way with it.

From a TV viewer's point of view, I mean.
The white really jumps out at the screen.

I've liked the GT whiteouts we've done. White and gold are our colors and we used to wear all whites, so it was kind of a throwback.
It seems the past time or two we did a white out it was frigid cold though, so that dampened it a little at night.
