Yea, I messed that one up.

I meant to say "UAB School of Medicine".

That is the common name (and getting more and more common), but it is the University of Alabama School of Medicine.

UAB is a damned fine Medical school. Good teaching hospital system. I wouldn't take a chance on watering it down

That is good news, but do worry about the quality of medical students coming out of another satellite location. Like they say, "What do you call the person who finishes last in his/her class at the worst medical school in America?"

Good post. UAB and the Medical School are crown jewels for the city of Birmingham. They bring much needed positive publicity (and $$$) to the city.

When a person gets their MD from there, what does it say on the diploma school-wise?

Possibly, but I don't remember. I've been out of UAB for four years now.

My friend just recently graduated with his MD, which is how I know it says University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Speir said the rift between MAA and UAB began several years ago, when the school of medicine's name changed from the University of Alabama School of Medicine to the UAB School of Medicine.

Turnbough said there has been no official name change, but the medical school has become known as the UAB School of Medicine in part because medical diplomas are signed by UAB's president and have the UAB name and seal, and graduates' ceremonial academic hoods are lined with UAB's

quote:

MAA members claim UAB's administration has cut off access to students and banned them from public ceremonies, including this year's commencement and the white coat ceremony. They also said UAB tried to fire the MAA's paid secretary and take control of a building it owns in Birmingham.

quote:

Speir said MAA's executive committee recently rejected a proposal, suggested by the two trustees, system Chancellor Malcolm Portera and UAB President Carol Z. Garrision, that would have combined the alumni groups. The deal would have given UAB financial and administrative control; in return, UAB would have dissolved its new alumni chapter and MAA would have access to students and participate in ceremonies, according to a document posted on the MAA Web site.

"It's UAB versus the University of Alabama," said Speir, who noted that two years ago, UAB even changed the colored patches on medical students' white coats from UA's crimson to UAB green and gold.

quote:

UAB created its own alumni group, the School of Medicine Alumni Chapter, in January. Old-line alumni association members say it competes with their association, which has represented UAB medical school graduates for 40 years.

"It's a power play," said Dr. Betty Ruth Speir of Fairhope, immediate past president of the association, known simply as the MAA.

No. UAB wants to take control. They use to be a satellite school of The University, but they now want complete control.

Read the article I linked. They are even pushing out the University of Alabama Medical Alumni Association that has supplied scholarships and furnishes the white coats for beginners. They want to substitute their own so they can control it.

They also were jealous of Bama football and moved from a small 2A school to a 1A to compete against Bama.

They want to be the numero uno school in the state, and no matter how huge they get, they will never replace The University of Alabama.

The University of Alabama is UAB's daddy.
