Yea, just makes me laugh mostly. I tell old college classmates where I live (Decatur) and they have never heard of it and then tell me how Atlanta is nothing but office parks and suburbs. I just kind of laugh and throw my hands up.

Which shouldn't involve football IMHO.
They should attempt to fill a void, not try and compete with something that already captures 90% of the state's attention. And that void is basketball.

One of mine graduated from UAB and the other is there now. UAB draws chit for crowds. So unless some big time money people like Richard Schrushy step up to the plate I don't see it happening.

I have lived in Atlanta on two separte occations. Atlanta and Dallas are the two most overrated cities in the Country.

The traffic statement is 100% accurate but it's sad that you worked/lived here and never actually experienced atlanta.

Atlanta has exceptional ethnic diversity that far exceeds Birmingham. It really isn't close. Feel free to take tours of all of Gwinnett County and Buford Highway if you'd like.
I'm going easy on you for being one of my ilk, but it really sounds like you've never been to Midtown, Va Highland, half of Buckhead, Brookhaven, Inman Park, West Midtown, etc. There are a ton of gentrifying neighborhoods that I don't even like (Kirkwood, Reynoldstown, etc.), but Atlanta has much, much more going on than Birmingham, and I like Birmingham.
Now, I do see how you can subjectively like Birmingham more (plenty of people do), but the less character thing is pretty close to being objectively false.

We will give them control over the Athletic Department but we get the Medical school back at UA. Fair trade.

Please tell me what I missed experiencing ? There are sporting teams, but why fight the traffic. Good Food, but I am not going to live in a city based on 50-100 Dinners out a year. Other than that, Atlanta is void of a soul.

Well, #1, both of those places are OTP, so they don't count. #2, In-Town Atlanta in 2014 is not even in the same stratosphere as in 1990 (I lived here in 1990 and my parents would concur), and isn't even really close to the same as 2005.

We are completely different generations. I could see how that may effect your view of atlanta. Also, atlanta's inner areas have changed drastically in the least 8 years.

Go to Norcross for the former. Nowhere outside of maybe New Orleans has a significant concentration of Italians in the Southeast.
But do you really not acknowledge that Atlanta has probably 10x the ethnic diversity of Birmingham? We have more people from a much wider variety of countries. The fact that they predominantly reside in areas you don't want to spend time in doesn't make it less true.
You seem to be hung up on comparing Dallas and Atlanta to NYC and SF. That really doesn't make sense, considering we've neither has ever been a first stop immigration city. It doesn't mean we don't have vibrant ethnic communities or culture, but you're comparing us to the cultural epicenters of the US.
Does Birmingham compare favorably with NYC or SF? No, and to be honest, it can't be compared to significant US cities. It certainly doesn't compare more favorably than Atlanta.
