A nation watching on television recoiled as one. A teammate waved frantically for a trainer. For a moment, Prothro sat with his hands on his knees, stunned silence reverberating through the stadium. Then Alabama's star receiver rolled over, face down, pinning his helmet into the earth. It's an agonizing image, an athlete coming to grips with his mortality in an instant.

The junior receiver on the Heisman watch list never played another down of organized football.

"It was the best game of my career and the worst game of my career," Prothro said. "Coach (Mike Shula) had already told us that every starter was coming out on the next play."

Former Alabama Star Turned Bank Teller

Interesting article. Maybe they'll let him carry out the game ball considering what he did 5 years ago against UF.

That's fricked up. You'd think he could get a GA position somewhere.

I figured he'd at least be selling insurance with his name recognition.

He is the soon to be former QB coach of the Jaguars.

Prothro worked with them as an unpaid assistant(intern?) this past offseason I believe, or maybe the year before...

I was at the florida game in 2005 about 10 rows up from right side of the endzone where it happened. I was also at the iron bowl two years ago when we ran out with the team and he was fully dressed out and I almost cried. Mike shula should give him a job. . .I really hate him. Who the frick has their starters in that late in a game when you're up that much? (Besides pete carroll) Even more who throws for the fricking endzone on 4th down in that situation.goddamn.

He'll be fine. That's prob his first job. A Bama business man is gonna set him up. Hell, I'm an LSU fan and I'd try to find a place for him in my business.

Honestly, you are just looking for someone to blame.

If you blame Shula, you have to blame Prothro for wanting to stay in, and Croyle for wanting to throw it deep one more time(his words).

While other members of the millionaire draft class of 2006, most notably Pacman Jones, have made it rain at strip clubs, Prothro has a different experience when it comes to rain. Thanks to a metal rod still in his leg, "I can tell when it's about to rain," he said.

It was probably a blessing in disguise. A lot of NFL players end up bankrupt, have a shorter lifespan and suffer through a ton of health problems after they retire. The quality of life really isn't that great.

Yeah, you're right. I just remember (when it happened) saying to my friend that our season and his career was over. The gator fans there weren't very sympithetic, they were happy about it and I don't know about you guys but if someone on an opposing team had an injury like that I wouldn't be yelling rammer jammer at them.

You wouldn't but Bama fans can and have. They cheered when Jefferson got hurt last year.
