2007, Article about the Toomer's oaks dying because of the cleaning by pressure washer. Said they may only live another 10 years or so.
Too Late for Toomer's Trees (click to read)
Here's LINK to finebaum site showing the original article & link to Dr. Scott McElroy at auburnturf.blogspot.com. When you follow the link to McElroy's blog, the original article has been removed from the auburn site.
--With many herbicides, if one wants to tell if a plant has been purposely treated, one would take soil and leaf samples, extract the herbicide, and run it through some chemical analytical test to determine if the herbicide is present. This process can take weeks. But with tebuthiuron, since it specifically stops photosynthesis, a negative herbicide effect can be determined in a few minutes. ... Everything is fine. It has been two months since the alleged poisoning, and there should be a reduction in photosynthetic activity– and there is not. Just in case it occurred more recently, Auburn Horticulture has taken some soil and leaf samples for future analysis, if any damage ever appears. For now that is a moot point, the trees are fine, just a little beat up from all the toilet paper clean up. I will keep checking over the next few weeks just to make sure.--
Now LINK to McElroy now saying his initial tests were wrong:
--My initial tests looking at leaf photosynthesis gave us the initial impression a poisoning had not occurred. But everyone knew the hard work of soil sampling had to done. And what did the soil samples reveal? A megadose of tebuthiuron, commonly known as the herbicide "Spike". Worst case scenario the trees will die. Best case scenario the trees will be disfigured to the point they have to be removed. --

That's just despicable. Hatred for a rival (even Auburn) has no business being vented against innocent (and irreplaceable) trees that have been standing since long before anyone in the state had likely ever heard of football.
With the agricultural and environmental regulations almost certainly violated by this act, the culprit could likely be facing devastating fines and penalties, in addition to significant jail time.

This is their mission statement

Our tree needs us. The city and university have spent so much time and effort preserving this great landmark and tradition for us, and for other generations to enjoy. I personally grew up loving the atmosphere and beauty of Toomer's Corner after a game and even when it wasn't being rolled. Someone has attacked the place we gather in victory and celebration. I know that the university said the fate of the beloved tree is grim, but maybe we can show it and the rest of the nation how much we love not only the tree but what it stands for, which was so cruelly attacked.

Move over UGA...
This picture is of a young oak tree grown from one of the acorns produced by the Toomer's Corner Oak. My son's fiance gave it to me for Christmas a few years ago, and it has thrived in my yard in Virginia.

Thanks to the people on here who are being reasonable.
To the people who don't care that the trees were poisoned, please don't be douches about it and show some respect.
