Benzos don't do this either, unless you're doing a ton of em.

Brain issues or alcoholism seem most likely.

I’d tend to agree with you here. Narcotic addicts typically don’t gain significant weight during their periods of abuse. If it is substance abuse related, alcohol seems like the obvious suspect. I almost hope it’s alcohol related as opposed to some type of degenerative health issue, as some have suggested. Todd seems to be in a bad way right now, so it’s good to see that he’s pulling away from the spotlight to address it.

My experience with benzos was it certainly caused this. I wasn’t taking as prescribed, mind you.

Either way something is wrong and hopefully he gets the help he needs.

If it’s medical and not chemical, it also looks like fluid retention from Congestive Heart Failure. If he’s having trouble managing the fluids, it causes all of the symptoms he showed.

I read the story of Lou Gehrig as a kid and his battle with ALS but I can't remember if Gehrig slurred his words. A terrible disease

Side effects of oral corticosteroids Because oral corticosteroids affect your entire body instead of just a particular area, this route of administration is the most likely to cause significant side effects. Side effects depend on the dose of medication you receive and may include: Fluid retention, causing swelling in your lower legs High blood pressure Problems with mood swings, memory, behavior, and other psychological effects, such as confusion or delirium Upset stomach Weight gain, with fat deposits in your abdomen, your face and the back of your neck When taking oral corticosteroids longer term, you may experience: Elevated pressure in the eyes (glaucoma) Clouding of the lens in one or both eyes (cataracts) A round face (moon face) High blood sugar, which can trigger or worsen diabetes Increased risk of infections, especially with common bacterial, viral and fungal microorganisms Thinning bones (osteoporosis) and fractures Suppressed adrenal gland hormone production that may result in a variety of signs and symptoms, including severe fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and muscle weakness Thin skin, bruising and slower wound healing

Not trying to make a diagnosis. Just pointing out he is stepping away and he appeared fricked up. Hope he gets the help he needs. Whatever that may be.

ALS is a very strange disease. It effects different people in different ways, sometime drastically different. My Pops lost his voice, had trouble breathing, couldn't swallow, but through most of it he could walk, even if with a walker. His seemed to start in his upper body. The first real symptom he had was trouble swallowing his medication. He'd get strangled regularly.

Other people it starts in their lower extremities. They have "drop foot" and they quickly start having trouble walking and they fall alot. Pops didn't have that until later. I say later, but from the time of his diagnosis to the time he passed was just over a year. His breathing issues are what got him, as he refused a vent because there was no chance of him coming off of it.

That illustrates another way ALS varies greatly from person to person. For him, it was basically two years from first symptom to his passing. Others can live for years. Some of those can live years with a form that progresses very slowly. Others can live years being "locked in" where nothing but their minds work.

I am thankful my Pops didn't reach that point, and that he was bed ridden really for only a month or so.

Fishfighter was a member here who went fought ALS. It hurt me when he told folks on the OT what he'd been diagnosed with. It is a terrible, terrible disease that basically a death sentence. My one big hope in life is that we somehow find a cure for it.

Yeah, he’d be goofy and wild if he was shite faced off alcohol. Red faced too.

He was in la-la land, zoned out, Tiger Woods type out of it.

Hope he gets it figured out.
