And it frustrates me too. WTF are some of these parents thinking. I can understand a parent shelling out coin to send their kids to Prep or St. Andrews (which, academically, are incredible) but MRA? Come on.

+1

Academics at St. Andrews and Prep are night and day compared to MRA.

If I lived in Madison I'd send my kids to the public schools there without hesitating.

Y'all don't know what the hell you are talking about. I know plenty of parents that sent their kids to MRA and being around blacks probably comes up in 1 of 100.

Okay, then why do they send their kids there?

Name one advantage MRA has for students that Madison Central doesn't have or offer.

Are black families who move out of Jackson to Clinton, Brandon, or Ridgeland racist?

They move there for a better school system for their children.

I know plenty of kids that were in the public school system that went to either Canton Academy or MRA because they just weren't good enough to play sports at MC. I know many kids that move into town from other parts of the state or country that start out at MC but are smothered by the 2,000 kid enrollment. Feel more comfortable in smaller schools. I know plenty of kids that go to private schools because their parents would like their kids to hear a devotional in the mornings if the teacher wants to prepare one. There are plenty of parents that are just public school bigots and think that if their kids want to get a good education then they have to go to a private school. You know the types - they just do it because they can afford it and think it's the right thing to do. Maybe they just are not being totally honest but I don't think I have ever heard anything about "not going to school with black kids" and I have lived here 30 years and my 3 kids went through the public schools here.

I'm stil curious ACADEMICALLY what MRA has to offer that Madison Central doesn't.

Also with the opening of Germantown, MC no longer has 2,000 students.

It's been open 7 days. Not germane to this discussion. Ridgeland opened 7 or 8 years ago and MC dropped to 1,400 or so was back up to 2,000+ before Germantown opened. There aren't 2,000 at MRA in K-12. Are you really this dense?

95% of Private Schools in Mississippi were started for a reason we all know. I will leave it at that.

My parents are both teachers in the Mississippi Public school system, so YES I'm a little one sided in views on private and Public schools.

I happen to live in a place where our public system is a good one. We have passed almost every bond issue that has come up over the last 30 years. We moved here largely by design because we knew the public schools were important. Public schools in Mississippi as a whole though are at best poor. Be a fan all you like but more people can't move or afford private schools than can.

Just take a long look at the dates many of the MPSA schools were started. Then think back to when integration started in Mississippi. That's all you need to know.

Not really all you need to know. Some things change and some things never do. Forty years is a long time.

Alot of the academies in MS still exist today because alot of the public schools are awful. Like most of the delta schools. It's a wonder any of the kids that come out of there can read.

Some public schools might be better academically or athletically, but it works both ways too. Some private schools might be better academically or for athletics.

I went to a private school growing up and had friends who went to the local public schools. When we graduated I was 2-3 math and science classes ahead of them. Their senior year they were learning things that we had been taught in 10th grade. Some of their schools didn't even have science labs.

I've heard from many friends who went to public schools that their teachers didn't really seem to care if the material was learned or not and people were just passed along from grade to grade.

There seemed to be fights going on in their schools almost daily.

I also knew people who had chosen private school over public school to get playing time in sports. My cousin wasn't seeing any playing time at the public school he was going to then transferred to a private school. He was a starter in every sport the whole time he was there and eventually got a college scholarship for baseball which he wouldn't have gotten had he stayed at the public school.

The athletic facilities we had were better than all of the local public schools. While we had a separate field for every sport that we had, and practice fields, there were public schools whose football field doubled as a baseball field and practice field.

Maybe one of the public schools had a soccer team, several didn't have track teams.

There are plenty of reasons why somebody would choose a private school over a public school, but it depends on the situation. The public schools around me weren't very good at all, but I know its not like that everywhere in MS.

MC is also one of the nicest schools in the state regardless of public/private. It would be hard for any school to match them.
