They are in the top 5 GOAT. But you can't give up nearly 300 yards a game in the Big East and allow 21+ points THREE times and be considered the GOAT defense, even if you did send 345 players to the NFL.

I don't remember the '01 Hurricanes losing.

The only offense that could sustain any drive is LSU.

In their game against Bama, Arkansas had three drives of 50 yards or more. 2 of which resulted in touchdowns.

On Nov. 5, LSU had one drive of 50 yards or more that resulted in a field goal. Our other field goal in regulation was set up by an interception by Mo Claiborne. Our offense moved the ball a whopping two yards and kicked the field goal.

But it's apples and oranges because the defense was such a dominating part of the game. Our defense kept us in the game and Mo set up our offense to tie the game.

Yeah, Miami's defense looked really suspect on that blocked punt return agianst Virginia Tech and that fumble return against Florida State.

That's more of a reflection of the battle between Bama's offense vs LSU's defense.

Bama's defense played EXTREMELY well in that game.

It's a debate over GOAT defenses, not GOAT teams. Bama 2011 obviously isn't the GOAT team but I believe it had the GOAT defense.

2001 UM was probably the best all around team of all time. I'm just saying that Bama's defense last year was probably a little better than theirs.

Now I'm just egging it on.

People can state stats all day long, but it's still going to be a subjective decision.

Sure, it's close though. If LSU's defense comes even close to comparing to either of those two defenses they will be kissing crystal.

Very well stated.

Now, as to the OP, we might want to let the 2012 season play out before we render final judgment on anyone's defense this year.

No doubt, LSU and Bama will both have their defenses discussed quite a bit this year.

Not if we have to play y'all again with the 86th best offense in the land.

Statistically, the 2011 BAMA defense is the greatest of the modern era. Its nearly impossible to compare apples to apples when comparing defenses in different conferences let alone of a different era ie.--1985 Oklahoma Sooners or the BAMA teams of the 60s. Feel free though... check the stats, the best defenses in recent history are 2011 BAMA, 1992 BAMA, 2009 BAMA, 2001 Miami, 1985 Oklahoma Sooners. I remember the 2003 LSU defense being really good too.
