Plus... they're better at sports and don't have poop swastikas.
Before anyone says " they're not southern," John Denver was more southern than just about anyone on this board. He may have never lived in West by gawd Virginia, but he sold it well.

I prefer Missouri to WVU and I really don't like Missouri. Not that I dislike Missouri, I'm just extremely neutral.

If we are choosing based on John Denver songs,
Colorado and Rocky Mountain High would be a better choice, IMO.

WVU brings Pittsburgh on their own? I would imagine that city is split between Pitt/Penn State/Ohio State and maybe a splattering of other B1G schools and then also WVU. Not sure WVU would bring Pitt on its own and with the rising tide of cord cutters who really cares? It's also an NFL town.

People in DC don't care about WVU.Maryland would have been a much better fit than either.

Nah. They're next to last. There's a reason that every other state says "Thank god for Mississippi." If you go to Google and type in "thank god for" the first result is Mississippi.

SEC has already got their quota of mountain folk. West Virginia is just a smaller, less populated, poorer, Tennessee

That's not actually true. Most WVU students aren't from West Virginia. They're trust fund kids from D.C. and Maryland who didn't get in to their state schools. It's kind of like kids from Georgia who end up at Auburn or Ole Miss, and there are a ton of them.

A coworker of mine did a lot of work in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, his family was also originally from WV. He said the Balkans reminded him of WV...and not in a good way.
