Mizzery's best bet to raise in most watched rankings:
Play somebody
Play somebody

Well, I just retired as nuclear surgeon who minored in brain physics so I'll give it a shot: initial TV ratings are a combo of preseason rank, fan base/alumni size and devotion, and historical legacy. If Mizzou wants eyeballs on sets, try to manage more than just the odd season or two of sustained excellence.

Excuse me??? You do know they've had 8 ten win seasons dont you? You read that right, 8! Maybe youll think twice before you badmouth them again.
8!
8!

You think any coach worth his salt would be bitching to his players that they aren’t on “great television times”? You’re a fan. Maybe that shits important to you but it’s not gonna make a difference in how a team performs

I’m no expert on why viewers watch some teams or games on TV more than others, but my intuition tells me preseason rankings aren’t as impactful as other reasons, like maybe geographic locations, population and size of fanbase.
But then, I have never been mistaken for a brain surgeon or a nuclear physicist. Thats for sure.
Yeah, pre-season rankings seem pretty far down the list that drives big viewership.
The main thing driving those ratings are brand name -- the team's fan base + all the fan bases that hate them + all the casual viewers that just recognize the names as big time college football.
If I had the choice of my network airing a season opener of unranked Texas vs unranked Ohio St OR #3 Texas Tech vs #6 Georgia Tech
I know which one I'd choose.

You also have the unfortunate reality that many of those non-brand ranked teams end up falling off or getting pummeled when up against a comparably ranked brand team.
People discount "new" lesser brand teams that are having good seasons, and aren't necessarily wrong.
I think the biggest fraud in rankings is the legacy B10 stuff. IMO those teams have the wildest swings in-year, every season.

Example is Iowa or Michigan. Both have two losses. Michigan is more storied program obviously, but they beat an unranked 5-1 Washington team in Ann Arbor and miraculously Michigan is ranked again? Make it make sense

At no point in my original post did I bitch about Mizzou not being one of the most watched teams. I accept that our program hasn’t won anything other than division titles over the past 50+ years. I don’t like it, I’m happy that the program is on an upward trajectory, but the record speaks for itself.
That said, how can you say that rankings don’t affect TV times? For real? How can you pretend teams don’t benefit from unearned rankings?
Of course historically good teams have bigger fanbases. That doesn’t mean they need to be given higher preseason rankings. Rankings should be based upon recent history, yes, but also current rosters and results.
It’s bias.

I agree.
Michigan lost 5 in 2024 and opened the season ranked 14.
Florida lost 5 and opened the season ranked 15.
Kansas State lost 4 and opened at 17.

Florida has a losing record and gets more viewers than Mizzou.
Why is that?
Why is that?
