The Punting Game:

Alabama's Christion Jones has returned 20 punts and averages 14 yards per punt return. He has two touchdowns on the year.

Auburn has only had to field 4 punts all season and gives up an average of 4 yards per return.

On the flip side, Auburn's Chris Davis has returned 11 punts and averages 22 yards per return. He has one touchdown on the year.

Alabama has had to field 10 punts this year and gives up an average of 5.3 yards per return.

The Kickoff Game:

Alabama's Christion Jones has returned 16 kickoffs and averages 30 yards per return. He has 1 touchdown on the year.

Auburn has had to defend 20 kickoffs and gives up an average of 24 yards per return.

Auburn's Tre Mason and Quan Bray have mostly split duties at kickoff return and have 23 kickoff returns and average 25 yards per return. Tre Mason has one touchdown and Corey Grant also snagged one on a return.

Alabama's kickoff team has had to defend 59 kickoff returns and gives up an average of 21 yards per return.

Scoring Touchdowns:

Alabama has scored 20 touchdowns in their 4 road games.

Auburn has given up 14 touchdowns in their 7 home games.

Against BCS AQ schools, Alabama has scored 40 touchdowns. Against BCS AQ schools, Auburn has given up 27 touchdowns.

Against BCS AQ schools, Auburn has scored 36 touchdowns. Against BCS AQ schools, Alabama has given up 12 touchdowns, but half of them came against Texas A&M.

Turnovers:

Auburn has 12 interceptions while Alabama has 10 interceptions.

Auburn has forced 8 fumbles and Alabama has 8 fumbles on the year.

Alabama has 10 forced fumbles and Auburn has 11 fumbles on the year.

Auburn has a +2 turnover margin. Alabama has a +5 turnover margin.


Pressuring the Quarterback


Auburn has hurried the opposing quarterback 87 times and has 24 sacks on the year. They have also broken up 42 passes.

Opponents have hurried Alabama's quarterback 35 times on 300 attempts this season, and Alabama has had 23 passes broken up. They have also given up a total of 9 sacks on the year.

Auburn averages 4.1 penalties per home game, and Alabama averages 7 penalties per away game.

Something that's really surprised me is how similar many of the stats are.

Both teams have fumbled about the same. They both have about the same amount of INTs and forced fumbles. They both don't give up a lot of sacks, though Marshall doesn't sit in the pocket very much.

They both handle the kicking game rather well. They both have returners that can make things happen.

There's three key stats if you ask me:

- Alabama's only given up a handful of touchdowns
- Auburn has a huge advantage in pressuring the QB
- Auburn's total defense yardage vs. Alabama's total offense yardage

Well of course it's played on the field. And Auburn's a team of destiny, so there's really not a chance that Alabama wins.

But statistical analysis is always an interesting topic in the days leading up!
