The playoff is broken. It needs to expand to 8.

Seriously. Group of five teams are auto disqualified before the season starts.

Imagine for a moment if Cincy were to upset the playoff and win it all. Recruiting jumpstart and then they would make their way up.

Theyre being held down by the Alabama and Clemson invitational.

This system is trash.

It needs to go to 8 to keep interest in the post season not because Alabama and Clemson are consistently great.

4,8, or 16 is not going to keep top teams from being at the top. But an expansion creates more interest and prevents the game from losing appeal.

I guarantee you group of five teams are hungrier for national representation than the SEC.

There would no doubt be upsets.

Nah four is fine

The only changes needed are permanent spots

For example Alabama is college football and should always be in the playoffs

I’m cool with Alabama being in every year.

The 3 and 4 seeds are a combined 4-8 in CFP semifinals.

In the 8 losses, they've been beaten by 39, 20, 38, 17, 31, 27, 11, and 35 points.

And Alabama will likely still be in every year. Thats fine. But undefeated GO5 teams being behind 2 loss SEC teams is awful

If you give Power 5 teams automatic bids, we’ll be right back here again talking about the haves/have nots disparity.

Try this:

1) quarterfinals: 4 major bowls; go down the list of top 25 teams. Seed as many conference champions as you can in the top 25. For right now exclude lower-ranked co-champions. If there are still seeds left to be filled, go back to the top and start putting in the co-champions you left off. If there are still seeds left to be filled. Go back to the top and put in the highest ranked at-large teams.*
2) semifinals; at highest-seeded teams’ stadiums.
3) national championship; could be a neutral venue or at the stadium of highest-seeded team.

*if an at-large team is in the top 3, they auto-qualify, with seed being no higher than the lowest ranked conference champion.

Edit: Just to test out this system, here’s how it would have gone this year:

1. Alabama
2. Clemson
3. Ohio State
4. Oklahoma
5. Cincinnati
6. Coastal Carolina
7. Louisiana
8. San Jose State

Unfortunately, Texas A&M and Notre Dame wouldn’t have made it this year, as all 8 spots would have been taken up by conference champions. But sometimes, them’s the breaks for not winning your conference.

An 8 team playoff covers everything.

SEC champ always in. ACC champ always in. Undefeated GO5. (Theres always one) Other conference champs or 1 loss teams. You cant go wrong.

Need to fix whats broken. Fact is 2017 UCF should have been in. Cincy deserves to be in this year. Needs to be larger.

I like 8. It will never matter where you draw the line, those left out first will be upset.

I see the advantage of 8 for teams that had early season losses, but by the end of the year are much improved. With 4 teams, you can be eliminated by the 2nd week of September. And it won't matter who you beat late in the season, you are out. My 2012 Ags were on fire at the end of the year, but not even in the conversation with a couple of early season losses. OU would have a case this year.

A&M would be in an 8 team. They deserved it too.

Does a 3 loss UF or 2 loss OU team really deserve the right to play for the title?

Yes. Because theyd likely be matched with an undefeated G05. That is what would prove their worth.

They can piss and moan about being left out but if they lose to a 2 loss OU or SEC? Cant say shite. And the two loss team would be rewarded with one last shot to beat one of the top 4.

You're crying about who should be in the 4th spot.

You'll cry about the 8th spot.

There is no fix for you, other than you need to stop being a dumbass.

Incorrect. The serious dropoff happens around 6. Anyone below 8 wouldnt be worth consideration at all.

No they wouldn't. UF would be matched with Clemson and would likely lose that one again. OU would be matched with OSU and that might be a decent matchup. Either way, they both lost multiple games during the regular season and don't deserve another shot.

If the drop off is at 6, we may not even need 8 seeds.

Have two play-in games (3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5) to settle the 3 and 4 slots for the semi-final bowl games. We can call it a wild-card round.
