The goat might have put up a better fight against the mighty Bevo than that little flea bag they now have.

Alabama had a live mascot that made only a couple of appearances in the 1950s.

Although he did not give dates for this custom, C.J. Schexnayder wrote on RollBamaRoll.com that the Iron Bowl once featured live mascots for both Alabama and Auburn. "During one period, the Iron Bowl would feature a parade through Birmingham and an elephant and tiger from the Birmingham Zoo would be included to represent the two schools," he wrote.

Was that The Auburn Eagle or AN eagle?

While other founders favored the bald eagle as a national symbol for its strength and majestic beauty, Franklin condemned the bird’s habit of scavenging and stealing food from other animals, calling it lazy and “often very lousy.”

The 50’s were a bad decade for us. They had to do something to drum up interest.

The university received additional funding through the 1862 Morrill Act which was used to create land grant colleges across the nation. In 1872, the $243,000 federal allotment to Georgia was invested to create a $16,000 annual income used to establish the Georgia State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (A&M), initially separate and independent from the UGA. However, A&M's funding was considered part of the university, which helped save it from bankruptcy during the Reconstruction era.

I actually think a Tiger is a great mascot. Mike the Tiger, of LSU is one of my all-time favorite mascots.

Is there a reason Auburn does not have a live tiger? I guess it might be more trouble than it's worth with PETA and all those groups harassing the schools today.

We have had them a long time ago. And some locals have them. One of the private bookstores used to have one. Probably more related to already having eagles and building a habitat
