I just want to say...I have been with this thread since page one yesterday evening, and it has been an honor and a privilege to have come so far with so many.
I started this thread, like so many others, with the simple hope of uncovering some new, mundane information and look where we are now. You stick your toe in to test the water, and sometimes the current just takes you away. 42 pages so far, and I have read every word.
Can we get this thread for the Kindle?

However, I would argue a law degree from a good school is by far the best education you can receive if you want to learn how to write well, be a critical thinker, and be quick on your feet.
That is an epic comma fail in the middle of an ironic statement. That being said, thank you for your continued contributions to this thread.

Many writing experts do not recommend the use of a comma before the "and" in the final phrase of a 3 part series. I have seen it done both ways though. Personally, I do not use one unless it would be ambiguous not to.

In 1998 Terry Bowden resigned as football coach with five games remaining in the season, despite a 47-17-1 overall record, after he was given the message that Lowder wanted him gone. Lowder denied any involvement. There was an outcry among alumni and students, but soon Bowden's replacement, Tommy Tuberville, was winning and the controversy subsided.A few years after his resignation, however, Bowden gave an interview to local reporter Davis alleging that Lowder had organized a program in which wealthy alumni contributed cash to a slush fund to pay players to sign with Auburn.
wow.

Lawyers tend to use a comma routinely before "and" to remove ambiguity as to the the relationship of the items in a list, indicating that each item in the list is separate and not paired with the preceding item. It is certainly a correct usage to use the comma in that manner, but it is not as common a usage in non-legal writing.
