I seems clear that the only way forward to clean up all the issues with transfers and NIL is to have a collective bargaining agreement, and for that to happen, the players will have to be considered employees rather than students. At that point, I'm not sure it's even going to matter if they are attending classes or not. Hell, they might not have to even be students. It would certainly give them more time to focus on football, which is probably what most want anyway. It could just get crazy.
On the other hand, they might just stop having football scholarships at that point, which would finally open up scholarships for some other sports that are still essentially amateur. Football eats up so many scholarships that we can even give them to everyone on the baseball team. Then again, we might just find that universities just cut scholarships way back to save money.
So really, who knows where we'll end. But some significant changes are surely coming.

Most people are being a bit myopic here and not seeing the forest for the trees. When Kelly left, Notre Dame was not doing the things it needed to do to compete at the highest level. They simply wouldn't pay for it. However, once he left, it was a black eye. So they started making changes. Freeman now has one of the highest paid staffs in the country. BK never had that. ND is also surely spending money on players now like they never did before.
So, Freeman is a great coach. He's not winning because of BK. However, ND is only a school where a great coach can succeed because BK left. So, comparing the two based on their performances at ND is comparing apples and oranges.
We still need to see more from BK, but this coming year should tell us a lot. We've ponied up for players. We've ponied up for an awesome an defensive staff. We should field a team that is in the upper echelon of the league. That doesn't mean we win it all (as there are usually quite a few teams built that way and luck always plays a hand), but we should pass the eye test. We should be close.

re: Who will be our 4th WR for the bowl game?

quote:Maybe we should move bowl games to the summer. They'd still be pointless (just practice), but you'd get your spring transfers in, get younger guys some PT, and get some idea of what your team looks like for the fall. It would be like a preseason game. Then you'd have some idea about what you need to work on in the fall.
It’s just to the point where these games are so pointless. This is the roster for one game. It’s after all of the players leave and before the new ones come. It’s just so fricking pointless.

That is certainly what happened. In addition, a pipeline was established to funnel profits from the opium trade into a black market NIL fund, and a computer virus was entered into the school computer system that will up tuition and ticket prices by a dollar to skim away later. This will fund his glorious return to LSU. This is all being run by someone operating under the nickname "The Walrus".
re: Is defensive line a strength next year?

Hopefully there's enough depth that we don't shy away from contact in the preseason over fear of injuries. It would be good if we were ready to tackle in game one.
re: Something seems to have changed with BK

Seems more like there's 2 different versions of Brian Kelly. There's comfortable/cocky Brian Kelly, and he makes some bonehead decisions (like hiring Matt House). Then there's embattled/hot seat Brian Kelly, and he makes magificent decisions to try to save his arse (like the defensive staff from a year ago). So, LSU is really the perfect place for Brian Kelly as we are going to hold his feet to the fire. It has yet to be seen if Brian Kelly is perfect for LSU.

Be hilarious if Sharp can complete a pass against OU next year.

Why the hell would LSU take backups when they need experience starters?
Most of what we are losing is developing players, and in many cases, they weren't really working out. You have to bring in some players that have a chance to develop to replace those guys. I don't think we can afford to have an 85 players roster where everyone is the caliber of a starter, but even if we could, there would be a mass exodus after a single season.

You'd still have hurry up drills, but they'd only happen when teams are behind. They just wouldn't happen in tie games.
re: The Overtime Rules Are Stupid

That is a good point. While I think it unlikely that neither team can score for 15 minutes, it does happen. So, in some rare cases it could continue for quite a long time.

you still haven't said why you believe sudden death if fair
Because the game doesn't change on a coin flip. Everyone knows that the game will continue if it ends tied, and if it does and you are in a tough situation because your tied it up late, that is the situation you put yourself in. You didn't get there on a coin flip. You got there on the basis of your play.

most every team plays defense when they win they coin flip in OT, that way you know what you have to match to continue in OT or to win knowing how many points the other team scores
Yes. Because that gives you a significant advantage, an advantage that came from a coin flip. That's why every team does that.

Your fate doesn’t rely on a coin flip in college. They both get possessions. In the NFL maybe but you still have to move the length of the field
So, the team that wins the toss and always elects to go on defense first doesn't have a significant advantage?

Then why don't we do this at halftime?
Theoretically, you could. But as one teams starts with possession in the first half, It seems unneeded.

how is sudden death fair? Both teams should have the same amount of possessions in OT
It's fair because your fate doesn't rely on a coin flip. Your fate is based on what you did in the 2nd half. You start exactly where the 4th quarter ended. If you have it first and 10 from your 30 when time expires, then you have it first and 10 from your 30 to start overtime.

I think they need to skip the coinflip, and let them play sudden death from the same spot where the game ended. You still take a stoppage like you do between quarters, but you don't change possession or where the ball is placed.
If you kick a FG as time expires, then you are kicking off to start OT.
If you score a TD with little time left, you might want to go for 2 because you are going to kick off.
If the other team ties it up with a minute left, there's no need to rush because you will keep possession at the same spot if time runs out.
It's simple and and it's fair. What they are doing now in both college and pros is just ridiculous.

re: Is it too much to expect LSU football to be in the 12 team playoff every year?
Posted by DocBugbear on 12/6/24 at 6:05 pm
You know... I suspect that if LSU was in the playoffs each and every year, they would never win. I'd rather them be in the playoffs every other year and win it every 4. Somehow that seems reasonable even though it's a little greedy.
