All the studies support what you're saying. Men live longer happier lives when they have a spouse. I think it would apply to longterm partners too (regardless of formal marriage).
Single men have it much worse.

I think men need partners. It's like Harlow's study on Rhesus monkeys - they were fed and had all their biological needs met but literally died when they were deprived of touch. Others developed deep psychological problems (basically they became psychotic).
And we know human babies will literally die without human touch. They also develop faster with interaction.
Point being as we get older we may not need mama but we still need and thrive on human interaction. We need the kind of bonds that only develop between partners or super-close friends. And I think men need it far more than women do but that probably has to do with women having a broader social network to lean on.
