Technically it's in the direction of our running back, who was next to the goal line. That's what kept it from being intentional grounding more than it striking the opposing player.

That being said, if you rule that a ball striking a defender is automatically intentional grounding, then batting a pass by a DL is intentional grounding.

Throwing at a defender in the hopes of a ricochet rather than an interception is a weird way to avoid a safety.

Another poster stated that 500 people explained it differently in that by hitting the opposing player the took away the grounding. I can't find the rule. I figure at least one of those 500 should be able to.
