I'll give you credit for one national championship in 1998

1951 was recognized by the AP, the 1938 team was not scored upon and 1998 was undefeated.

The 1939 team was the one that wasn't scored upon.

so UT has 3 consensus and 3 Bama, I mean bogus titles.
still, Bama is the pioneer of claiming national championships off of retroactive polls. others just followed suit.

In 1938, Tennessee was voted Champions by FIVE of the SEVEN polls that existed that year to crown a National Champion.

1938:

Tennessee, #1 in Billingsley Report, Boand System, College Football Researchers Association, Dunkel System, Houlgate System, Litkenhous, Poling System, and Sagarin Ratings.

TCU, #1 in AP, Helms Athletic Foundation, National Championship Foundation, and Williamson System.

Just for the record: Notre Dame #1 in Dickinson System.

Tell that to Ohio State, Notre Dame, and USC.

Don't make Alabama out to be the bad guy here.

It doesn't matter how many you think Alabama has. Whether it be 13 or 8, Alabama still has more national titles than anyone else (tied with Notre Dame if you go with 8).

I have never in my life saw a tshirt on a UT fan that says "Got 6"...Bama is the only school that promotes itself with the mythical national championships...

The University of Alabama does not make those shirts (just as AU didn't make the Beating Bama, So Easy A Caveman Can Do It shirts). Your problem is with Smack.

Prior to 2005, I saw UGA shirts proclaiming "Got 11" (in reference to their 11 SEC titles at the time) in the same design as Alabama's "Got 12" shirts, all made by the same company.

Whoever started this thread is a blooming idiot and must not have followed SEC football very long. Everyone in this conference.....heck, region of the country makes fun of Bama for making up National Championships and having shirts, bumper stickers, hats, etc. with 989787897897 National Championshpis on 'em. You NEVER see Tennessee people wearing anything that says 6 National Championships. I claim 2 (although can see a case for 3).....1951 and 1998.

Well you really cant argue with SEC Championships...everyone (fans, media) would agree that UGA has 11 SEC Championships...now Bama could make a got 22 tshirt a no one would say anything...we are talking NC...Bama says 12...the media says 8...do you see where we are going here?

I don't see why 1938 wouldn't count.
Even 1950 UT had a lot of selectors. It's 1940 and 1967 that are a little hard to go with.

Tennessee claims the following 6 national titles:

1938
1940
1950
1951
1967
1998

In 1938, Tennessee went 11-0 and won the Orange Bowl, yet did not finish as #1 in either the AP or UPI poll. They did finish #1 in several other polls, like Houlgate, Dunkel, and Billingsley. These are some of the very same "retroactive" polls that are used as ammunition to discredit Alabama's titles. TCU was also undefeated and won the AP title.

In 1940, TN went 10-1 and LOST in the Sugar Bowl. Losing in a bowl game has widely been used as a means of discrediting Alabama's claimed titles, but we see here that TN uses the same system. Tennessee's national title is based on their recognition by Dunkel and Williamson, NOT the AP or UPI. Minnesota and Stanford were also BOTH UNDEFEATED in the 1940 season.

In 1950, Tennessee went 11-1, which was the same record that Kentucky had that year, though Tennessee did beat Kentucky. They did, however, lose to a Mississippi State team with a losing record. Oklahoma also had 1 loss and was awarded BOTH the AP and UPI titles, but Tennessee claims this one anyway.

In 1951, Tennessee (10-1) won the AP title, despite the fact that Michigan State AND Maryland were both undefeated and untied. Georgia Tech and Illinois were also both undefeated, though each team had a tie. So, among the 5 teams that claim some form of a national title in 1951, Tennessee was the only team with a loss.

In 1967, Tennessee went 9-2 and lost in the Orange Bowl. USC and Oklahoma were both 10-1, and USC claimed BOTH the UPI and AP titles. In the Orange Bowl, the Volunteers faced Oklahoma and lost. So, despite finishing with 2 losses and losing to a team with a better record (remind anyone of 'Bama in 1941?), Tennessee claims a title for 1967.

The 1998 Tennessee team, though perhaps the luckiest team to ever win a BCS title (even compared to '02 Ohio State and '07 LSU), earned arguably the only completely legitimate title for the Volunteers.

you sir are the dumbest mother phucker on TD SEC rant.....a gump trying to rip someone for claiming a MNC.

I'm just making a case about the shirts, not about the championships.

The media does say 8 (during the AP poll era). They say 8 for Notre Dame (who claims 11), and 7 for USC (who claims 11). No point in acting like Alabama's the only school who claims championships before "football was even played"...

But what difference does it make? If you're content with what your school has accomplished, then why cry about someone else?

The only reason I ever get involved in the conversations is because Bama fans try to make fun of Auburn fans when they talk about 1983, 1993 and 2004...hey it was your famous coach that said "If a laundry mat in Tuscaloosa wants to crown us national champs, we'll take it"...Auburn only claims one title, but they could technically claim 1913, 1957, 1983, 1993 and 2004...as far as Bama goes I don't care...

And prior to this thread, you claimed 6. After you sign off of Tiger Droppings, you'll claim 6.

I don't know one Alabama fan that hasn't dismissed the 1941 claim.

People like you make it sound as if Alabama claims titles based on any one selector alone. If that was the case, they'd claim 25. Heck, why don't you make cases for some of our best years of which we weren't recognized by the AP or UPI? 1936, 1945, 1966, and 1977? I don't hear you crying about those?

And considering it's bogus to claim pre-AP/UPI titles, from here on out, we may as well say pre-SECCG titles are bogus as well! What's the difference? Since Alabama has 22 (of which no other SEC team comes close to having), overall, let's go ahead and start the protest!
