Debating whether to put money on this one. If Tenn defense was better it would be a no-brainer.

UT President Joe Johnson (God, I miss him) called Johnny down in front of everyone.
UT had some NCAA troubles. A meeting was held to discuss the action that had been taken.
Johnny let everyone know he was not happy. He informed the powers that be. "The next time this happens. I will handle it myself."
Joe Johnson stopped him right on the spot. "John, the next time this happens. You won't be one of us."
No coach is bigger than the program.

IIRC, it was part of a larger rebranding effort within the athletic department.
They slowly saw the err of their ways and started moving back.
Original helmet after rebranding:
"Oh shite, that Panther looks like a dinosaur, change it."
"That font looks stupid. Just go back to the cursive Pitt."
"Steve Pederson got shitcanned. Go back to the old unis."

That’s just the regular road uniforms. Although I am kinda surprised they aren’t going with orange pants for King Johnny
