No actually it's pretty simple. Nico couldn't hit wide open deep passes and he was slow as baby shite when deciding to go with the ball. So defenses didn't need to play us completely honestly last year. Our offense is heavily predicated on hitting those 50/50 balls. Our WRs would be wide open many times while Nico was in la la land.

It's pretty funny how the narrative of most UT fans here has changed now that Nico is gone. Most were telling us this time last year how Nico was going to light up SEC defenses based on the destruction of Iowa. Now, we are being told he was never going to cut it at UT and good riddance.

Stats don’t lie.
They were shite against every SEC opponent last year except Kentucky and Vandy. Those were the only two games he passed for more than 250 yards and those two games accounted for five of his 9 TDs in SEC play. Two of the others came against Mississippi State.

Only Kirby Smart and UGA have won consistently against us there since Heupel arrived.
It just occurred to me that Alabama has never beaten us in Neyland while Heupel was head coach, and that has put a big fricking grin on my face.

They did the exact same thing with Milton

They were in the playoffs last year, dummy.
Oh, and they own LSU. All time, scoreboard, the whole ball of wax.
Maybe you should worry about LSU being relevant

This is a stretch. So UCLA said "this guy's worse but maybe we'll sell an extra 100 tickets for the first few games!"
Numbers wise Nico was worse. I was really hoping that this year it would click for Nico.
But, it was more, we can get a 2-3 million a year QB for a million and he will generate interest in our program. And of course Nico has a higher ceiling, has the potential to play at the next level that is unlikely in Joey. But given where they are today, system, roster, experience, proven vs potential… Joey will put up better numbers and UT has a higher ceiling than UCLA.

Yeah that tends to happen when you compare an SEC player to someone going up against the James Madison Dukes and Old Dominion

Because your offense is becoming obsolete and those are the only two opponents in the SEC you played who don't have the talent level to play with a light box.
Nothing will change with Aguilar.

News at 10, five star phenom recruit looks merely mediocre as a redshirt freshman. If I only had a nickel for every time this has happened.
JA is the NCAA 's leading returning QB, career production wise by the numbers in the country. This is a completely different QB situation than Nico and pretty much all of the recent NC winners did it with an experienced transfer QB.
Heck, I say he get one of these guys every year in the portal moving forward and hold a fair competition every camp because recruiting QBs out of highschool is a very imperfect science so to speak. Give me a proven winner over potential any day.

Remember when LSU fans thought that they were going to boat race Bama last year after Deboer couldn't get it done in Neyland?
LSU fans deserve exactly why they have with BK. Soft finesse Yankee coach. He's Butch Jones mentor for crying out loud.

We have one of the best running games in the country annually now. I don't know what you are smoking but when Heupel finds himself a real QB again, no one will be able to stop us and you know it
The rant is hoping and praying that JA is a bust.

You have one of the "best running games in the country" because people are inviting you to run the ball all the time by playing with a light box. The Briles offense demands you to run the ball when the box is light and you have the numbers advantage. That's what it does.
And that's why your QBs won't throw the ball. Too much coverage downfield sitting on those sideline go-routes and deep posts.

Heupel's offense forces lighter boxes, yes but we are recruiting very well at RB as well right now and our oline has gone a great job getting consistent pushes upfront.
That's why no one will have an answer if JA is what we think he is.
We have the top recruit in country coming in 2026 and a true freshman this year in Gmac who has been turning heads in camp.
There will be no more Joe Mliton nor Nico I-am-a-leaver to save this conference from a complete Vol takeover. We coming.

How you recruit and who your QB is will never matter. Your offense isn't forcing lighter boxes either. Lighter boxes are being forced on you, and your QBs won't know what to do.
That offense has one weakness, and that weakness is any team who can control the running game production with a light box, which is just about every team in the SEC. The SEC is the last place I'd run that offense, for that very reason.
This is why your offensive production falls off dramatically in conference play except for the teams at the bottom of the league (Kentucky and Vandy) who don't have the talent up front like everybody else. The only thing that's keeping Tennessee from getting blown out week to week is your defense is really good. If that defense ever dips, you're in big trouble.
We spent years in the BIG XII diagnosing ways to stop that offense when they ran it at Baylor. You know why we failed? Because nobody had the talent in their DL to play with a light box like just about everybody in the SEC does.
One of these days, apparently not soon, one of your notable Vols fans in your fanbase community is actually going to do a deep dive on the Briles offense and tell you what I'm telling you right now.

And when it holds true this year it will be look at who he had around him at UCLA vs who Joey had at UT?
