Chavis was good at Tennessee. He's great at LSU because of Miles's aggressive philosophy. We didn't get to see that at Tennessee under Fulmer.

I do think one of two things happened:

a) Fulmer, the conservative coach that he is, kept Chavis from doing his best.
b) Miles, the aggressive coach that he is, bought out the best in Chavis.

Not sure which one, but I do think it's likely that one of these was the case. Maybe it was some combination.

Not trollin, just making a statement.

Unless you define trollin as making a statement that has been made by a former head coach over and over again....

Chavis is just a great fit at LSU alongside Miles...Miles reels in the talent, Chavis coaches em up. Not to mention Chavis has complete control over the defense under Miles.

LSU is a DC's dream. LSU has always had freakishly athletic players.

When LSU got Chavis I remember many posters here saying the guy is overrated and they wouldn't take him back. Is that same sentiment still in effect?

When Chavis went to LSU, most people had a "we don't need him, we have Monte Kiffin" type attitude. Chavis was a very solid defensive coordinator. The guy had several national championship caliber defenses in Knoxville.

So to answer your question, I believe a lot of people think differently only because the Kiffin experiment didn't work out. At the time, they (we) thought UT had better.

Chavis had been helped at LSU by having Ron Cooper coach the defensive backs. Having a tenacious secondary helps avoid those 3rd & Chavis situations he had in Knoxville.

Chavis can't win without Cooper's recruits

yeah maybe. Monty Kiffin is definitely not a better college DC than Chavis. Dungy made that dude.

I've made the statement in the past while Chavis was at UT he was held back by Fulmer who loved to play it "CLOSE TO THE VEST", "BEND BUT DON'T BREAK" style. He's got to LSU he's got the horses and he's turning them loose. The guy is the best LB coach in the country and he seems to be playing a lot more aggressive with his secondary now he is in LSU. And he had some PRETTY good DB coaches at Knoxville. I always thought Fulmer called the shots on whether to bring the heat or keep everyone in front of you...Seems like since he's playing for the hat he's changed up a little...

I don't think there's a question about that. I was just giving the rationale as to why UT fans were quick to dismiss Chavis at the time. As the poster before said, as much as we believe Fulmer held back the defense, he held back the offense twice as much. Now that Chavis has more control, you can see what he is capable of.

It isn't hard to have an elite defense when you have elite talent. He has had elite talent at UT and LSU.

Ask Doug Mallory and BDP if this is true.
