Well, there were 10 teams in the SEC, and we used to only play 6 conference games in a season, so after Bama, Ole Miss and Miss State, I suppose we would just kinda take turns playing the other 6 teams?

You know, I guess these could be some of the reasons LSU does not have the historic type of rivalries others have.

True, but look at an SEC media guide. Excluding Arkansas and South Carolina,of course, look how rarely Auburn played Ole Miss for instance. Alabama hardly ever played Ole Miss or Florida.
Georgia Tech and Mississippi State, two original SEC members play this year for only the third time ever--both games played were prior to 1933,the SEC's first season.

Although the conference realignment screwed up 2 of our traditional rivalries (UF and UT), overall, it has been good by forcing everyone to play each other.

It makes you wonder how much influence Vaught and Bryant had on the SEC. I'm sure they didn't want to face each other because it would likely have cost each other the conference championship or an NC at some point.

They sure did,but they also started playing each year from '65-'71.
Another oddity is Starkville and Nashville aren't that far apart and until 1970,Vandy and State hardly ever had played one another.Weird.

I'm really glad UT is playing Auburn this year. I think it will be a great game between two very good teams. Can't wait!

This is a perfect example of my curiosity. I knew we were not the only ones left out I just thought it was odd how the pairings seemed so random.
Ex: Pre'92 I am sure they did not take many flights to conference games. So with LSU's main (now)East opponents being FLA and UK, those aren't exactly short bus rides. But then you have UT-Bama/UT-AU. Which are what four hours at the most. How did we pick the 16 hour drives.
I have read Pete Finney's book the Fighting Tigers and I don't remember him mentioning it. Are there any other good books ok the SEC football history?

This is pretty good, although its just through the '79 season. Other than books written about the individual school's history, no other book on the SEC jumps out at me.

Before the rotating schedule was put in place, our conference schedule was kind of hit or miss. We didn't play Auburn between 1942 and 1969, and didn't play Georgia between 1953 and 1978.
As I-59 pointed out, in 1968 we only had four conference games, but played four SWC conference teams (we went 4-0 - might should have tried for the SWC title that year).

We had a game against Texas Tech that counted as a conference game one year back in the 1960's.
