Damn, UF vs LSU is so close. I like our bowl record compared to them though, so I give us the nod
No but seriously I'm not sure one team can edge out the other. It's as close to a draw as they come. They had a heisman winner and hold the head to head count.

Believe it or not, I didn't even think about comparing head to head (6-4) and the heisman thing never entered my mind becuase, while having a heisman is something nice to crow about, it doesn't affect wins and losses on the field. I gave Florida the nod becuase of their slightly higher average finishes in the poles, but as I said in the OP, I could absolutely not argue convincingly for one over the other.

Would the 2000 Orange Bowl count for Alabama?

You asked for it.
The rankings look pretty good to me FWIW.

Agree. Bowl record is in LSUs favor but they played in one more BCS bowl than LSU did.

No since it was technically the '99 team that made it to the Orange Bowl.

No, its part of the 90's. Like I said in the OP, if we were to count 1999, Alabama would clearly move ahead of Auburn. But we can't so I gotta keep us at 5.
Its kind of funny: For Alabama, this decade started in Los Angeles with some of the worst disappointment I've had as a tide fan (the loss to UCLA confirmed my pre-1999 thoughts on Dubose) and ended in LA with some of the most joy. Kind of ironic.

I'd put Bama over UGA because of the NC, but not above Auburn.
So, why the same logic doesn't work in the second case?

I didn't understand this either. Comparing just Auburn and Georgia, its clear Georgia did much better than Auburn this decade. If you have Alabama ahead of Georgia, how can they NOT be ahead of Auburn? Its the transitive property!

Sorry, I just couldn't put you in the 2nd tier without a championship. Looking back at your decade (and remembering the mid to late nineties) it really amazed me how quickly Fulmer fell off.

I am in agreement with this list and think it is a very good one.
I will say it is 9 more wins for AU than Bama and I do not really think you can just rank a team number 26 when they are unranked. That just does not make sense. In all of Bama's losing or .500 seasons or 7-6, they were not near the top 25. In 2008, AU was no where near a number 26 ranking.

Where else would you put them? We're using the AP rankings after all.

If you just wanted to pick an arbitrary number for a team like Bama or AU, I would say about 35 or 40 might be closer to correct for a losing season (since AU and Bama were usually 1 or 2 games under .500). For a team like MSU, it would probably be like 50.
So, you have to either figure out a way to weight the ranked seasons only or get in depth and look at how each team really fared in an unranked year.
Like I said, an average of about 35-40 would probably be pretty accurate for AU and Bama except maybe 2004 when Bama was like 4-8 or something.

What's the difference between being ranked 26 and 35-40? Heck, there isn't any difference between 26 and 60. Being unranked is all the same to me.
