STAAAATS! - Coaches and their run vs. pass tendencies
Posted on 12/21/12 at 9:33 am

I got curious yesterday as to how coaches generally went ratio wise in run vs. pass play calling over their careers. And seeing as I was bored as shite, and this board sucks recently with the trolling, I figured I might try to add something relevant to talk about, and get some discussion about how the longer tenured coaches have changed over the years. For example, seeing how Spurrier completely changed his play calling with the signing of Latt, and wondering if that changes this year again with him gone. How Kevin Sumlin did the same thing with JFF. And blah, blah, blah...tl;dr
Next couple of posts will be all of the years broken out. Spurrier, Pinkel and Saban were a pain in the arse.

Good stats. FYI, Alabama's offense is much closer to 50/50 in the first half if you look at the numbers. But they've had so many blow outs, it looks like it's almost 2-1 run to pass.

Would be interesting to take out "garbage" plays. Would also take foreverrrr

I'm curious to see how (or if) Bielema's rush/pass ratio changes now that he's hired Jim Chaney. I could be wrong, but I have a feeling we'll see a more balanced ratio this coming season. We're also pretty thin at RB now with Knile Davis going into the draft, Dennis Johnson graduating, and Donovan Roberts transferring.
The only RB we have that is a serviceable every-down back is Jonathan Williams.

Is Bielema looking at any JUCO backs?

Chaney was 46% run, 54% pass this past season at Tennessee. It will be interesting to see where the middle ground is between him and Bielema this season.

So this is the first time since Sumlin's been a HC that his team rushed more often than it passed.
I'm assuming that had more to do with JFF taking off on his own on called pass plays, than Sumlin calling more run plays.

Saban's are a little misleading for this year.
Too many blowouts, forcing him out of the game plan and running the ball more in second half. Also caused a significant drop in total second half plays.

first half 56% run
second half 72% run
this is plays, not yardage
second half 72% run
this is plays, not yardage

Not so far. It looks like they are trying their hand at seniors first since RB is a position the freshmen can come in and have success.

Not entirely true, there is the possibility of a JUCO RB being an preferred walk-on...

How often does that happen? Isn't it rare? For our sake and I suppose yours we need a couple of FR to make an impact early. I hope you are right.
